MWGL LAN Reminder
- Posted 2:48 PM By Krogue
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    3 Comments | Add
Just a reminder to all the members. Call your friends, talk to your co-workers, or just plain flag down strangers on the street. However you can do it, remind people about our LAN in October. We want to fill up those seats.

I have posted invites on a couple of LAN sites up here in Iowa. Do the same at LAN forums where you have played before, or where you have friends who have played.

Remind people that they should pre-pay too, in order to get the price break.

I am sooooo looking forward to making the trip down to see everyone. The location looks spectacular.

Safe, Wire-Free Electricity

While not really gaming related, I thought it'd be rather cool for those of you who haven't heard about this new product from the folks at MobileWise. Although currently aimed at mobile/laptop users, the uses for this technology could be almost endless. Basically, instead of running the AC/DC adaptor to the back of you're laptop, you just your unit on the Wire-Free-Electricity Base(TM) and your laptops batteries get charged. Word:
The flat surface of the Wire-free Electricity Base resembles a small desk blotter. Once a MobileWise-enabled device is placed anywhere on the Wire-Free-Electricity Base, it will be powered and charged, as if it is plugged to an electric outlet. The Wire-Free-Electricity Base is as safe to use as a mouse pad - without concerns about liquid or food spills. It's even safe to place metallic or magnetic objects on it. It emits no harmful radiation, and causes no radio interference.
Definately cool stuff.

Ever wonder if those "high-end" video and audio cables that companies like Monster Cable are really worth the extra cash on top of what you've already spent for that spiffy new PS2/Xbox? FiringSquad puts you in the know when it comes to answer with their Console Picture Guide. They not only cover the basics and explain the various input types you'll run across today, but also show you in-depth the clarity difference of each between the basic included cable and what Monster Cable brings to the table.
We’ll focus mostly on the PlayStation 2, as it is the most popular console, but by the time you finish reading this, you’ll know how to maximize your console’s picture and sound performance, whether you have an AV system that’s 10 years old or 10 days old. This is a comprehensive article, so make sure you’re comfy before you start reading.
Pretty comprehensive read if you're clueless about various video output formats and how the right cabling can make a world of difference.

Tribes 2 Patch Issues
- Posted 9:51 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Apparently the planed "re-release" of Tribes 2 has run into a few snags, as can be read in this post on the Tribalwar Forums by Sierra's Alex Rodberg. Apparently they ran into a number of issues with the recently-released TRIBES 2 patch that were not discovered during beta testing. These issues have pushed back their planned in-store release of the re-release (say that three times fast) until around November 27 in order for them to resolve the issues. Quick rundown of the known bugs:
We are aware of the following problems.

All T2:
  • a known issue that affects servers running dual AMD processors
  • missing reticles

    In TR2
  • a known issue with the queue not working
  • a bug that allows looting of dead bodies
  • a bug that allows people to get past the OOB grid
  • a bug with armor changes when changing positions
  • a compression bug
  • I have to admit, after the demise of Dynamix (i.e. Sierra axed them), I thought all was lost, but the fact that they continue to work on issues, is a good sign and has restored a bit of my faith in the gaming industry. End of line...

    Nvidia Detonator 40.72 Beta

Apparently there were a few complaints/issues with the last release (i.e. 40.71) of Nvidia's Detonator 40.xx series of drivers, though I never found a listing or report explaining these issues. None the less, Nvidia has released a new set, Version 40.72, of the 40.xx series of Detonator drivers to address these reported issues. No word on any gains/losses in performance as of yet (probably little if any being that they're just resolving issues/incompatibilities).

Get your joysticks ready because Microsoft Game Studios's Combat Flight Simulator 3 : Battle for Europe has gone gold. This World war II flight sime is scheduled to ship to stores in North America on October 24. A word about the game:
The skill and perseverance that pilots and their squadron or Staffel bring to each battle can alter the tactical situation and the timeline of the campaign. This open-ended dynamic campaign engine allows pilots to influence events and the front line. If they can persevere in the war, squadrons can even add new technology to their arsenal.
World War II sure seems to be the theme of the day with alot of the current games doesn't it? You can also get more information on the title over at CFS Insider.

    NOLF 2 Patch Troubleshooting
    - Posted 4:26 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
For players of Sierra's just released No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way, who have applied the 1.1 patch and are still having issues, Sierra sends along a list of steps to use to try and clear up difficulties. Word:
What the NOLF2 1.1 patch does:
    1. Corrects an issue where a different audio codec installed on the user's system may be used instead of the provided codec, even if the provided codec is available on the system.

    2. Incorporates minor localization changes to ensure that U.S. players can join European servers and vice-versa.

If some sounds and speech are still missing after installing this update, then please follow these steps to correct the problem:

    1. If you have installed the Nimo Codec pack or any other 3rd party codec pack, uninstall it and the game, and then re-install the game.

    2. In your Windows\System folder (or Winnt\System32 if using Windows 2000 or XP), delete the "l3codeca.acm" file. If there's another file named "l3codecp.acm", delete this too.

    3. If using Windows 98 or ME, open the system.ini file in your Windows\system folder, find the section labeled [drivers32], and delete ONLY the line that starts with "msacm.l3acm=". In the case of the Nimo codec pack, this will read "msacm.l3acm=l3codecp.acm"

    4. If using Windows 2000 or XP, open the system registry editor (regedit) and delete the following key:* "Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm"

    5. From your main Nolf2 installation folder, double click on the file named "WMFADist.exe" and follow on-screen instructions.

*If you are not familiar or comfortable with modifying the contents of the system registry, then please ask a qualified person for assistance.
I think I'd go a tad further on the registry comment and note if you're not compfortable with editing it, uninstall Windows n00b (j/k).

Finally, a wireless optical mouse for gamers
    - Posted 9:05 AM By Freex
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    2 Comments | Add
Tired of messing with mouse cords? Upset your wireless mouse isn't handling that new FPS game with precision? Well, thank Logitech for this new wonderous device. Not only is the MX700 wireless and optical, it has higher resolution and faster transfer rates than the other wireless mice, plus it comes with a docking station to recharge the batteries. Pretty kick arse to me. Here's a snip on the review from Extreme Tech:
The bottom line: Logitech has delivered a superb cordless mouse perfectly suited for gamers. It's not cheap, but you can finally be free of that annoying tether without having to sacrifice 3D gaming performance. It's also a great mouse for everyday use as well -- if you're right-handed. It's the most comfortable mouse we've used to date, and the additional page scrolling buttons offer some relieve for an overworked forefinger. The lack of tether is an ergonomic plus, too -- you're not always pulling on the tether, which can be surprisingly tiring after a long day.

SwiftTech's New MCX462+T (Peltier for AMD)
    - Posted 3:13 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Ok, I'll admit it, I think I like hardware as much, if not more than the games that run on it. For those looking to go a bit beyond the standard air-cooling in their rig, SwiftTech may have a new solution for you with their new MXC462+T unit. They've basically coupled one of their outstanding (and not to mention heav!y) heatsinks with a 226Watt Peltier element. Some of this beasts features include:
  • Cooling capacity: up to 100 Watts to ambient with 80CFM fan.
  • Hybrid copper base, thin aluminum pin heatsink: thanks to it's massive 1/2" thick copper base, the MCX462+™ is the first commercial air-cooled heatsink on the market capable of absorbing, and dissipating the combined thermal load produced by a thermoelectric module of this class, and the latest generations of micro-processor.
  • Patented Helicoid pin design: pins are individually machined in an helicoid shape, to increase their surface area, and further enhance heat dissipation efficiency.
Exceptional quality and attention to details: the heatsink base is lapped to 0.0003" (3/10 of 1/1000"), and polished to near-mirror finish to promote optimum thermal conductivity.
  • The 1/2" thick cold plate is also fully insulated to eliminate condensation.
  • This is definately for those wanting to push their CPU to it's overclocking limits, assuming you have the hardware (i.e. memory, etc.) to handle it.

4 Core Itanium 2 CPU From Intel?
    - Posted 6:14 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    1 Comment | Add
Here's a new toy for SMP fans. In a keynote address at the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, Intel's John Crawford described how they could combine four Itanium 2 cores that share a large cache memory to create a processor with more than 1 billion transistors. He went on to note that such a design is "imminently doable" from a die-size and manufacturing standpoint and that "we would expect something of this nature coming out."
Crawford did not disclose specific plans for such a processor, though he said Intel will be able to design and build a 1-billion-transistor microprocessor using 65-nanometer process technology by 2007.

Crawford went on to describe a hypothetical processor that would contain four Itanium 2 cores and 12 to 16 megabytes of shared cache memory, all connected through a leaf interconnect scheme. Each Itanium 2 processor would contain about 120 million transistors while the cache would carry 700 million to 950 million transistors, bringing the total transistor budget to well over 1 billion, he said.
Now could you imagine a rig with two of those things in SMP?! Talk about pure, raw, processing power! Course the only thing us gamers would care for is how many FPS we can get.

    Mechwarrior 4 : Mercenaries Preview

Like bid, bad, armored to the teeth mechs? If 'ya do, be sure to read XGR's preview of Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, the upcoming expansion pack to Microsoft's giant robot shooter.

This is an awesome new addition to the MechWarrior series. You compete against other mechs in an arena for total domination. There are three arenas to start off with: the Jungle, the Factory and the Coliseum. Each has their own class divisions that you climb by winning the previous class. These are light, medium, heavy and assault. Each arena has its own tactics that it takes to win as well. The jungle is more suited to fast light/medium mechs. The factory and coliseum allow for the use of larger weapons because of their space and are therefore more suited for heavy/assault mechs. This is where I had the most fun in the game. You hop in your mech and it's you against everyone else. Allies can be formed in the match, but in the end its you or him that comes out the victor. There can only be one.
Unfortunately it's a short review and void of any pictures, but it may help bring you up to speed on what to expect from the expansion.

I imagine it'll be quite some time before we see something like this showing up in the average persons home, but it's still exciting none the less. Imagine a new device that will allow you so view an image from all side, in full color, without the need for any wearable device (head-gear, etc.). Word:
Three-dimensional holographic video images will be generated by a computer rather than being fixed in a static medium; they will be shown in full-motion color and, with input from a user, changed on the fly. What’s more, viewers who move around a holographic video image will be able to see it moving from every side—a phenomenon important to realism and one that many conventional eyeglass-based systems cannot replicate.

For those of you already engulfed in Westwood's Earth & Beyond, their recently released massively multiplayer space sim, you may already know that they're planning on releasing monthly updates to include new content, etc. If you aren't in the know, then here's the word:
Westwood Studios(tm) announced today that it will release a content update of Earth & Beyond(tm) this month that includes several new missions, high-level items, new information on trade goods, and enhancements to the embedded browser. Earth & Beyond is an online role-playing galaxy that is published by Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) under the EA GAMES(tm) brand.

Westwood plans to add features, enhancements and content to Earth & Beyond at the end of every month as the game's galaxy continues to evolve.

This month's update will go live Oct. 30 and will include:
New missions for all character archetypes.
New unique items that are dropped when players kill high-level monsters.
A speed increase to all ships while planet side.
Improved item drops for mid- to high-level monsters.
Additional information on trade good items.
    Graphical enhancements to combat.
    Enhancements to the embedded browser.
In addition to the planned monthly updates, Westwood will release event patches for special occasions, including one planned for Oct. 31. This patch will deliver content for a special in-game Halloween event to be held that day.
Dynamic content would definately be a nice change to some of todays current online games (*cough* EverQuest *cough*) so that you're not always stuck with the same 'ol grind.

Well, it took a bit of time, but three weeks after Microsoft started shipping newer versions of the Xbox which made current mod chips incompatible, hackers have once again triumphed. Some blokes in the UK apparently felt up to the challenge, and within a weeks worth of work, broke the new system. I'll be curious to see if there's another "new" model out before Christmas, haha.

Players get their choice of either playing as a Cowboy or Bandit playing in 3 new multi-player maps which include 11 new "authentic" and one "not quite authentic" weapons including colts, Harper's Ferry musket, and dynamite sticks. One interesting note about the mod:
Unlike Wolf, taking hits will cause you injury and slow you down. This is great when you're the attacker as you can see the results of your attack on the enemy but if you're the one taking the damage you'll find yourself praying you can make it to cover before your finished! Players can now recuperate some health by resting. If your stamina is at full, you will regain health up to a maximum of 69. Again this should highlight the importance of taking cover when you're under fire or hit.
They're even added a few small features such as animated horses and characters. So throw on your chaps and get in the game partna.

Well, here we are at the LAN event. We've got quite a showing so far. We have nineteen available seats, which do not include the empty prepaid. We'll get an updated count out later today. This facility is AWESOME. If you haven't been out here, you should make an attempt to do so. This is shaping up to be the best MwGL event ever. Right now, we're making sure everyone has a connection, which is going really well, since the network is already run and tested. We'll be getting started on the Q3 tournament shortly. And, hey, if you're not busy, come grab one of the few remaining seats! :)

    UT2K3 Tournament

Well, the second tournament is now done and out of the way. It was an exciting mix of free-for-all deathmatch and one-on-one. After a few rounds to narrow it all down; dbh, TrueSign, and Thief (aka Adam) were the last three left. It was a close battle to remain in the top two to play for first place, but TrueSign pulled in just above Thief, placing Thief in third place a mere couple of hours after installing the game! The final match was dbh versus TrueSign. A bloody drawn out battle that truly came down to the wire. After the fifteen minute timelimit hit, the guys were neck and neck with a score of eighteen. After a lengthy battle between the two during the sudden death overtime, dbh fired a disappointinly aimed rocket into the floor a little too close and lost a squeaker 18-17. Congratulations to the winners. Also, great job to TrueSign, another participant who installed the game for the first time only a couple hours before winning the whole thing.

I must say, for the first tournament in UT2K3, it went very smoothly once the servers got set up correctly :) Great job to all the participants.

Congratulations on Reborn for beating Team Panda twice, to claim first place in the Counter Strike Tournament. Good job, also to RCS for third place. Yes, early morning with no sleep, certainly did not prove to be a good playing environment, but thank you all for participating and way to go for those that stuck it through to the bitter end. Also, for those of you who participated, please give us feedback!!. Thanks again, everyone!

AOL instant messenger and ICQ are testing to see if they can get their two programs to talk to each other. This is brought to life due to the ever growing popularity of the two programs.
"They are two separate communities and both are showing strong growth in registered users," Bentley said. "We are implementing the test basically because of growth of AOL Europe and ICQ's leadership in Europe and demand from AOL members who wanted to exchange messages with ICQ users."
This is perfect for gamers who constantly run into others that have a different preferance. Now we can "all get along."
