BF 1942 : Road To Rome Golden
- Posted 7:03 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Many had speculated that the announcement for the upcoming Battlefield 1942 expansion Road To Rome would closely coincide with the release of today's previously mentioned 1.3 patch for Battlefield 1942. Shortly after the posting of the patch, they confirmed that Battlefield 1942:Road To Rome has indeed gone gold. So what all are including in this new expansion?
The Road to Rome will focus exclusively on the key, yet largely underpublicized Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII. Players can choose to fight on six new maps including Operation Husky (Sicily), Operation Baytown and the battles for Anzio, Salerno, Santo Croce and Monte Cassino. Each map comes with highly detailed environments such as Italian houses, Mediterranean trees and even the ruined Monte Cassino Monastery.

Controllable vehicles are the heart of the Battlefield 1942 experience and The Road to Rome will feature eight new vehicles in addition to the more than 30 in the original title. These include the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engined fighter-bombers. Also debuting are Italian and new British and German tanks and anti-tank guns. The original Battlefield 1942 PC game will be required to play The Road to Rome.
Expect to see it in your favorite software stores soon.

Apparently some users are experience sound/music issues after updating to the newest Unreal Tournament 2003 patch (2186) according to the folks at Epic. Fortunately there's a simple solution. Simply overwrite the existing "DefOpenAL32.dll" file in your system folder with this one (basically a Pre 2186 patch version).

Star Wars Galaxies Gets Stripped
- Posted 1:15 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    4 Comments | Add
Those of you looking forward to the upcoming Star Wars Galaxies MMORPG, it appears as if you're going to be missing some of the most anticipated features when the game ships (still supposed to be sometime mid-April). Apparently in order to get the game out the door in time, they've decided to forgo the following:
As we moved forward and continually revised our schedule, it became apparent that the postponement of several significant systems would allow us to release the game sometime in mid-April. The most important of these systems were:

-Player Cities
-Player-Owned Vehicles
-Player-Generated Missions
-Dark Jedi (okay, this is really a "feature", but still…)

At that time, we also began work on our Live Team schedule, which provides a plan for implementing the postponed systems within the first seven or eight months after launch.
Nothing but quality. I can only hope with this much "reduced workload" on the coding side that they have the time to ensure the product that goes out the door will actually install and run without having to download 200 megs worth of patches before you even get a chance to play.

BF1942 Road to Rome Hits Store Shelves

Yeah. That pretty much said it. $19.99 should be the general price, unless it goes on sale next week. If you like the original, definitely think about picking this one up; especially with the event this weekend.

For those of you who don't know where Rome is, it's in Italy. That's where this expansion takes you; to the Italian campaign of World War II. It features six new "battles", two new armies (Italy and The Free French Forces), eight new vehicles (including the British Mosquito), and some new weapons (including the British Sten submachine gun).

Update From The LAN

Things have been in full swing all day here at the LAN event. At last count, we've had around 115 people turn out for this weekends gaming festival, though the numbers aren't quite tallied yet. The UT2K3 tournament was first on the list this round, congrats go out to Brett (1st Place), Excedium (2nd), and Mohabi (3rd). We're currently working through the CS Tournament and will post results when they're completed. This event also marks our first trial into trying something a little different than the usual pizza you'd expect to find on the meal menu. This time around, we decided to actually go the route of the grill and cook up burgers and hotdogs for all attendees. We hope you found it a nice change of pace. More news as it becomes available...

NVIDIA and Microsoft End Xbox Arbitration

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    1 Comment | Add
NVIDIA Corporation and Microsoft Corporation announced that the companies have settled all issues related to pricing of the Microsoft Xbox GPU (graphics) and MCP (audio and networking) chipset and have ended the arbitration between them. In addition to resolving this pricing dispute, the two companies have agreed to collaborate on future cost reductions for the Xbox. More details will be provided during NVIDIA's quarterly conference call to be held February 13, 2003 (Thursday).

"This is a win for both companies, and we couldn't be more delighted with the results," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at NVIDIA. "NVIDIA and Microsoft can now take our partnership to the next level and focus our substantial resources to maximize the full potential of Xbox game console."

"With the arbitration resolved, we look forward to continuing the partnership between Microsoft and NVIDIA and turning our focus to building on the great success of the Xbox platform," stated Robbie Bach, senior vice president of Microsoft and Chief Xbox Officer.

On a final note if you are the proud owner of Microsoft stock, it just did a two for one split if you owned it before 27 Jan 03 :)

Midnight Club II Delayed
- Posted 4:42 PM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The highly anticipated ROCKSTAR GAMES sequel, Midnight Club II, has been delayed until 18 March 2003 for PS2 and soon to follow for the XBOX. This, in my opinion, is a good thing. I mean, who wants a buggy title? This racer will be the most up to date, feature packed title to date for the console. Especially with on-line capability!

Take this racer to the internet and enjoy 5 different modes of gameplay; such as: Career Race, Circuit Race, Race Edit, Capture the Flag (Oh yeah) and Detonator. There is room for 8 peeps when you play on-line.

For those of you that like the off-line gameplay as well, you can expext new features such as "railbranching," which now allows the AI to branch out from the normal, "straight" path to victory. AI will make split second decisions to take an alternate path to whoop up on you. Also, throw in motorcycles to the mix for an all out true experience of street racing. This new title also throws in police helocopters to make the big getaway more heart wrenching than ever.

There are truely many more options that will make this title a very addictive experience! I predict this game's sales will go above expected and compete with the "blockbuster" games for that almightly "Game of the Year" award. Don't believe me? Check out their intense web site.

RADEON(tm)9700 - Anisotropic Filtering and OpenGL performance on the RADEON(tm) 9700 series of cards is up substantially across several applications. - A performance improvement between 20 and 40% is noticed in UT2003 Flyby.

RADEON(tm)8500 - The following section provides information on performance improvements noticed on the RADEON(tm) 8500. This includes: Anti-Aliasing scores rise 15-35% across various benchmarks.
No word on "real world" performance improvemtns, but who cares, I get to play the demo faster, whooopee! (Yes, I still prefer Nvidia, haha).

Command & Conquer : Generals Q&A
- Posted 6:11 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Game Over Online has posted up a little Q&A session with Mark Skaggs executive producer of the upcoming Command & Conquer : Generals. Word:
Jeff: So there’s no definable tech tree in Generals as there has been in previous C&C titles?

Mark: There is, but the experience point system is in addition to the tech tree. What we’ve found is that the point system allows people to play the game the way they want to play it. If you want to go along and play just like you would another C&C title, you can do that. However, the point system would come in handy when it came down to planning out your overall strategy. Once you’ve gotten a certain amount of points, you may sit there and say to yourself, “Okay, I want really good base protection, so I’ll get the EMP Pulse instead of Artillery Training.” The next time you might say, “All right, I tried this ability and didn’t like it, I’ll try another.” On the other hand, if you’re playing a friend and he uses a power that you’ve never used, you may say to yourself, “Wow, that was really effective! I have to try that out.” There’s quite a bit of flexibility in the strategy and the gameplay.
I have to admit, this is the first game to bear the title of Command & Conquer that has sparked my interest in quite some time as I've found the last 2 or 3 releases to be lacking in the fun department.

The Sims Celebrate Birthday #3

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
It's hard to imagine that it's already been three years, but 'lo and behold, The Sims line of games turns three today.
"Three years ago, no one believed that a videogame about people and social interaction, without shooting, driving or what passes for action, could be published successfully," said EA President and COO John Riccitiello. "Today this game, The Sims, has evolved to become the world's most successful PC game and a global multi-platform success. The Sims' incredible appeal among teens and young adults, and especially among female players, has broken all the old established rules about videogames." --EA President, John Riccitiello.
Love it or hate it, this title of games will probably be around for quite some time as it's one heck of a cash cow for the folks at EA Games. And just in case you're one of those "gotta know everything" types, here's some interesting factoids about the game to-date:
  • The Sims franchise has shipped over 24 million units, including more than eight million units of the core product, The Sims.

  • Since the launch in 2000, The Sims franchise has spawned five expansion packs and a deluxe, console, and online version. The Sims has been translated into more than 17 languages and is sold worldwide.

  • An estimated 60 percent of The Sims players are female, most of them young teens.
  • And you just thought it was lonely geeks sitting in a dark room that played these games, hah!

    Microsoft Slash Game Prices?
    - Posted 12:25 AM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Before you say its about time that games are dropped in price to an affordable rate, read what I have to say.

At first glance this seems like a great deal. Microsoft decided to lower the cost of some of their games from the high price of $39-$49 to a mere $19.99. Great, right? NO! These are games that Microsoft calls their "Platinum Hits." Games that have been on the market for 9 or more months and have sold 350,000 - 500,000 copies. That's right, once the sales have obviously peaked or stalled, MS is nice enough to drop the price to $19.99. At a glance this might sound like a decent deal, but does this apply to all titles? NO! MS will exclude it's most popular title, HALO, from this discount. Ed Bland, a senior director of sales and marketing for the Xbox, had this to say: "It is doing very well at $49," noting that it will move to "Platinum Hit" status at some point later in the future. In my opinion, this is calling all gamers stupid. Since you suckers are still willing to pay $49 for this game, we will continue to sell it to you at that price.

It looks like we are still far away from reasonable pricing on games that hit the shelves for PC and consoles alike. Prices like these drive the piracy community to excel. If the software companies would just release their titles at reasonable prices (especially accounting for the quality of their product) I believe they would profit greater monitarily and expose their product to a bigger community that would not normally drop $49.99 on a game. I for one can name very few games that I wouldn't mind purchasing for $49.99. Am I wrong? Hit the forums and let me know!

Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory Retail Release Cancelled
    - Posted 8:04 AM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
id Software and Activision announced today they are cancelling the retail release of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Just as a bit of clarification, this will only affect the single player version, which was planned to be released for retail sale, the multiplayer addition is still in the works.
Despite a strong effort from talented developers, the single player portion of the game did not progress as anticipated. Cancelling the release was a difficult decision made in the best interest of the Wolfenstein franchise and fans.

However, we remain excited about the progress and direction of Enemy Territory multiplayer. Over the next several months the focus of our development will be to complete the multiplayer portion of Enemy Territory and provide it as a free downloadable expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Nobody ever plays single player missions anyhow, do they?

    C&C Generals v1.3 Patch Info
    - Posted 7:53 AM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    2 Comments | Add
No, the patch isn't out yet, but Harvard Bonin, Producer of Command & Conquer Generals, has posted a preliminary list of changes to be included in the 1.3 patch which is set to be released sometime this week:
    1. Fix the remaining connectivity issues with firewalls/routers, etc. We got most of them last time but we at least need to provide a reliable workaround for players and at best will provide a patch to fix all the problems. (PS...I'm referring to players entering games and immediately getting the disconnect screen...sometimes games don't load for all players, etc).
You can read the full list of changes here or click on the "Read More..." link below. Nice to see that they've been rolling out patches to take care of the issues, but it begs to question if they shouldn't have tested the game a few more weeks to get them taken care of before making us guinea pigs.

And as a little side note, if you're wanting to learn how to use the Worldbuilder for C&C Generals, EA has released this handy guide to help you out.

"We are currently evaluating the best strategy to accomplish these goals and look forward to growing our business as a new company. At Pacific Theatres 15 in San Diego's historic Gaslamp District, you'll find the latest Hollywood releases. But when you walk through the doors to one of its auditoriums, you'll find titles that only gamers would immediately recognize such as, "Battlefield 1942", "Tekken," or maybe even "Madden 2003."

The theater offers 100 stadium gaming seats, each equipped with Internet-connected computers and gaming consoles. Visitors can choose from over 3,000 video games (from "Madden 2003" to "Counterstrike") for the PC, Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, and Microsoft's Xbox Live.
Okay, so who's up for a road trip to San Diego?? If I'm ever in town, you can bet I'll be having a look-see. Here's the article.

Those of you who're already playing, or perhaps just picked up a copy, of Ubi Soft's recently released Splinter Cell, be sure to head over and grab the new v1.1 patch. Not much is mentioned about updates/fixes except note that it "will make the game look better, fix some corner cases AI bugs, and also give you faster FPS." Can't complain about a bump in the 'ol FPS, woot!

As mentioned earlier this week, EA has released their latest patch for the recently released Command & Conquer Generals. Here's what's fixed this time around:
  • QuickMatch stability and matching
  • General connection fixups behind routers (multiple players behind the same router, refreshing the player IP after a failed connection)
  • Refresh button added to Custom Lobby
  • Game List/Player List no longer pops to the top occasionally
  • Player List no longer jumps, etc. making it difficult to click on a name
  • Communicator requests addition of buddy to both players. Also, incoming messages get a sound effect Spaces in front of games in Game List no longer allowed
  • Game Lists/Player Lists alphabetize in upper and lower case
  • Ping tolerance icon adjustment to make more useful
  • More accuracy in number of players per game in Game List
  • There's also an alternate download link over at WorthPlaying.

    Harbinger

Browsing around on WORTHPLAYING, I ran across this interesting looking game. Some of you may have heard of it already, but I've outlined a few of the more interesting "key features".
    • Unique science fiction setting. Nothing in Harbinger has been seen before in books, on television or in movies.
    • Unpredictable AI. Harbinger's enemies patrol realistically, interact with the background, react to threats believably and don't simply wait for the player to attack.
    • Over seventy levels built from five large and diverse tile sets.
    • Over sixty-five unique enemies including six extremely challenging bosses.
    • Event-driven storyline with each game lasting between twenty and twenty-five hours. The player's actions drive the story, so no two games of Harbinger will unfold in the same manner.
More information, including a flash trailer and screenshots, is available here.

If you caught Anthos's previous post reguarding the upcoming title Harbinger and thought it might be a worthwhile title, heck even if it's your first time hearing about it and still think it looks cool, then you'll want to know that it is now shipping according to this post over at Voodoo Extreme.
Harbinger is set in a dark world where death lurks on every corner, with 65 different enemies hiding across 70 different levels. Gamers take on the persona of a human, a robotic gladiator or the feminine Culibine; each with their own distinctive traits. The game features an intuitive interface and gamers can expect more than 75 hours of gripping game-play.
Heck, and you can't complain that it's only supposed to carry an MSRP of $29.99. Well, I guess you could complain about the price if you buy it and absolutely hate it.

    Castlevania Title for PS2 Confirmed

Ah, the good 'ol days of the ever-popular NES (Nintendo Entertainment System for you young'uns). Ageless titles like Mario Bros., Zelda, and of course Castlevania. It appears as if Konami is finally stepping up to the plate and bringing a Castlevania title to the PS2 according to the folks at Gamers.com. Word:
Though Konami has yet to confirm an official title for the game, the project will be headed up by Koji Igarashi, producer of the classic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and developed by the same team at Konami TYO that developed Symphony and the successful Game Boy Advance Castlevania titles. The publisher promises "exhilarating action, a rich story, breathtaking environments, dazzling next-generation graphics and a sweeping musical soundtrack" for a "fantastic new vampire-hunting adventure." And apparently it will be set in Transylvania -- none of this new-school Castlevania-of-the-future nonsense.
I don't know about you, but I'm psyched for this one, I just hope it lives up to the legend.

Looks as if Sega is taking a turn for the worse, according to this story over at Yahoo! News. Apparently they've just announced a 20% workforce cut from their U.S. Headquarters in order to streamline (i.e. boost stock prices so CEO gets big fat check) their operations. This could bring an interesting development, considering there have been rumors floating around that both Microsoft and Electronic Arts have an interest in purchasing the company, even though both have denied this claim.

    Mechwarrior Goes Hollywood?

Interesting little story over at PC.IGN. Apparently filmmaker Dean Devlin (he was the producer of Godzilla (1998) and Eight Legged Freaks) is looking to make a Mechwarrior movie based off of the popular gaming franchise.
He says he plans to make the film look like a $150 million movie with an actual budget of less than $100 million. By contrast, Devlin's Eight Legged Freaks cost just $30 million to make. "The type of CG we'd use for this movie, in which warriors battle in giant mechanized suits of armor, would be much easier to create than spiders," he says.
So what exactly does a $150million dollar movie look like, and how the heck are we suppose to compare it to a $100million budget? Are fans gonna walk out saying "That really didn't look like a $150million dollar movie, $110million maaaaybe"?
