According to this story over at CNN.com, Intel has developed some new semiconductor packaging that will allow them to build a chip with one billion transistors running at 20 gigahertz within the next six years! Here's a snip:
The new packaging does away with tiny, solder balls that connect the microprocessor core, or die, to the packaging material, the method now used in Pentium 4 chips and chips from other semiconductor manufacturers. These solder balls allow for power to flow to the core and for data to pass among the core and the rest of the computer's motherboard and chipset.
Liquid nitrogen anyone?
