-- What's in a Name? (http://www.mwgl.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=735)

What's in a Name?

Or in other words, why do you use the name you do? Where did it come from and does it hold any special significance?

Way to start us off with an example Burn!! <applause>

Anthos = From Greek derivative of the word flower or flowering (my last name = Flowers). I was a bio major at the time I came up with this and we happened to be studying a creature called anthozoa, which means flowering animal. So, there ya go.

Rolls make good sandwiches.

And it sounds neat.

I have an unhealthy obsession with dragons... well all things draconic really.
And I'm from the KC area... And Shadows just seemed cool.

Oh and my "Old School" gaming name, BitchMonkey, that came about from when I worked at CompUSA. Tiberian Sun had just been released and everyone was staying at work late to play it. I was the lowly Mac guy, so in an effort to "be a part of the team" I begged.. erm.. asked if there was an available spot for me. Long story short I made a few really good kills in the opening moments of my first game. One of my bosses shouted "OK which little bitch monkey just did that?" It was me.. I admitted it. And the next game (and since) That was my name.

I ran out of time before I could post mine. I was at work and wasn't paying enough attention to the clock, so after I typed the opening I looked down and saw it was time to log back into the phones. Figured I would just add it later. And don't worry, no matter what scientific explanation for your name you come up with, you'll always remind me of the Warlock Anthos from the old Scooby-Doo cartoons

Ok, as for my name. I had been using the name Dragon Shadow (which by the way was the name of a comic book character I made up when I was younger and has slowly evolved into Drakkoon Shao which is my SWG name, but that's another story) and thought it was too generic. So while playing "Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight" my freshman year at Rolla I set about coming up with a new name.

I had been obsessed with flight from a very young age and for a long time my goal was to fly jets in the Air Force. Even though I had recently come to the realization that me + the military would be a bad idea because would probably just end up getting court marshalled or something, I still wanted to fly one day. Because of this I picked Pilot as a base and began searching for something to add to it, to distinguish it. BurnPilot was one of the first names I came up with and even though I tried to come up with something better, it just felt right and stuck. I have used it as my primary game name to this day.

My name comes from other peoples mistakes.

I attended the first FRAG (better known now as QuakeCon) at the infomart in Dallas Texas. I wasn't sure that I was going to make it so I did not pre-register and walked into a 600 person LAN hoping for a seat. I got lucky and was able to register. When it came time for the Quake 1 DM tourney to start (yes kiddies, Quake 1) I ran up to put my name in. The guy asked me what may name was and I replied "mooreman." He said, "warman?" I repeated "mooreman", but he still couldn't hear me over the noise of all the excitement. He told me to tell the girl next to me who was doing tourney registration as well. She asked, "what is your name". To which I replied "mooreman." She said "warman, what a cool name." I was by myself surrounded by strangers and decided to leave it at that. Later, when they called "warman to the front" (the tourney was held on their computers), I thought to myself: you know that is such a better name than mooreman. Sometimes, to have fun, I will introduce myself as mooreman, to which 9 out of 10 people will hear it as warman.

I played CS and other games at a freinds house years ago right after CS went retail. We were trying to find unique names for the CLQ since that was the only way we could compare who was improving the most since we were sharing his computer. I think it was subliminal from Jay from clerks but whatever.

I now go by 'cat poop waffles for justice' in NS which I play a lot at the HK & CoFR servers, which was a random late night game name with the for justice added in from that all your base video. honestly I have found that really odd names are the best, since you are well remembered and admins recognize you after a few rounds. I usually randomly change my name from day to day in CS since I have a short attention span while server hopping, but I keep one name when I play BF1942.

DarkPhan, short for Dark Phantasmo, was computer generated by a BBS that a friend and I wrote back in the late 80's (boy, I think I just dated my self there) ... been using it ever since...

I suck

Mine is simple. During high school, a friend's nickname for me was Voge the Rogue. Pretty much the only thing that could come close to ryhming with my last name.

Put a K in front of Rogue and been using Krogue ever since. Actually used that as my nickname even before the computer gaming scene took over my life.
