10 Games you are looking forward to in 2004

Ok, so I'm got the idea for this thead from the latest issue of PC Gamer. When I read over thier games list though, I couldn't help but wonder what got left out. Here's the start of my list (will finish it this evening after work and class), it's a mixture of PC and Gamecube games.

PC

Battlefield Vietnam
Dungeon Siege 2
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Soldner

Gamecube

Final Fantasy: Crystal Cronicals
Star Craft Ghost

The new Pirates! by sid Meier
The final release of NS 3.0

I'll second that one! Only two games I give a hoot for in 2004 are UT2K4 and DOOM III, that and maybe WoW if they get it out on time. On the WoW note, they're opening registration tomorrow at 6pm for folks to sign up to try and get in on the next Beta round.

Oh right, obligatory Half life two is to be mentioned, assuming its actually going to be out this year.

I was going to mention that one, as well.

UT 2004
HL2 (this year?)
Splinter Cell 2
CS:CZ

I guess I'd have to include Dungeon Siege 2 and BF Vietnam, although I hadn't heard of them.

Northland looks like something ouf of which I'd get a kick.

There's another Rainbow 6 game coming out.

Soldner, I think I'd probably include, as well.

There are a couple other ones that I haven't taken a close look at, but which strike interest. For example, the new LOTR game, this fall.

On a side WoW note, the registration lasts until 6pm(that would be PST, or 8pm your time) Feb. 4th, and is not on a first come first serve basis. Also, if you have more than one registration per household, then you are SOL!

Anyone got a link for the beta?

Games I look forward to:

XBOX:
ESPN Baseball (Live Enabled)
ESPN NFL 2004 (Live Enabled)
Halo 2 (Live Enabled)
Sega Gt Online (Live Enabled)
Worms 3D (Live Enabled)
Maybe Starcraft (need more info)
XBOX needs a C&C type game as well! I would surely buy that.

XBOX RELEASES

I also want to get a glimpse of the Nintendo DS. The 2 screen hand-held.[

Wow looks like I'm the only one looking forward to Doom III. I don't think the multiplayer if there is any will be good, but I think the game itself looks awesome. And of course most people will buy the engine and so on.....

Other than that I really don't look forward to future releases, I buy stuff that's been out for a year or so,

Posted by Squirre1 on 01-28-2004 09:15 AM:

I think Doom III is going to be kewl as well but it is going to be real intense at the same time... Alot of new games are going to require some upgrades...

I don't know, I can't escape the feeling that Doom 3 is going to be nothing more than a glorified tech demo.

"Ohhhh.... look at the purdy lights and colors, look at the high detail models. You want to pay us to use this engine for your game."

It just seems like there is going to be no substanance to the game and blowing away things mindless will get old real quick for me.

Posted by snooggums on 01-28-2004 01:31 PM:

I also expect the stryline to be lacking, but hey, it's Doom, I want scary things jumping at me from the dark. Other people will make the fun games from the engine for multiplayer.

As far as system requirements I'm sure it will be playable on some old equipment, but not look as good. I swear I read a review where their approach to the graphics will make it a lot less intense on the CPU and VidCard, without losing the look of the game. That was supposed to be their reason for going with bumpmapping over higher polygons, if I remeber the article correctly of course.

Oh, you mean another Quake 3? Yeah, I'm not super excited about Doom 3.

I thought you weren't into paying to play online?

And is Ghost on the PC, too, or are you just planning on playing Burn's Gamecube?

Guild Wars looks like it might be kinda cool. It is supposed to be a more action oriented MMORPG that focuses less on leveling, supposedly a level 20 character should be able to compete with a level 30 in pvp. Plus it is going to have no monthly fee. Me, I'm still playing Star Wars Galaxies. Things are really getting good, they are currently testing contraband scanners. Looks like being a smuggler might finally pay off

I'm not, but I may make an exception for this one. No guarantees, though.

When I was damning Blizzard, it was because they were making this game console only, so yeah, I'm planning on using Burn's GC. Or, if the prices on PS2 and Xbox drop like analysts think they are ($120?), I may buy a PS2...maybe.

Oh, yeah...another game I've been waiting for awhile...

Advent Rising.

Anthos, you should be drooling over this game (part 1 of a trilogy of games). The story and dialog was written by none other than Orson Scott Card.

I think this is the most anticipated game for me.

Never heard of it, but I'll *hump**hump* just for Card.

ANTHOS' NOTE: If you have never heard of Card and are even remotely a fan of science fiction, then you need to go to the book store and buy some of his books; or, at the very least, go to the library and check some out. The guy is frickin' awesome.

I had thought the Ender's books, including Bean's, totaled 5 books, but I guess there's seven, with an eighth coming out pretty soon. Mike, you know anything about this?

Trailer and screenshots on here:

http://www.lucasarts.com/games/battlefront/

Q: Is Star Wars Battlefront playable only from a 3rd person perspective?
A: You can play in both 3rd and 1st-person perspectives and it is switchable in-game. We foresee situations (piloting vehicles, etc.) where sometimes it will be advantageous to switch perspectives back and forth so it's up to player preference.

Q: What do I need to play Star Wars Battlefront online?
A: For the Xbox, you will need Xbox Live to play, and for the PlayStation 2, you will need a PlayStation 2 Network Adapter. For the PC, a broadband Internet connection is required along with an ISP. A broadband Internet connection is required for all platforms.

Q: Will there be a charge to play Star Wars Battlefront online?
A: No, there's no additional charge to play the game online. However, players are still responsible for their own ISP and connection charges.

Q: What is the maximum number of human players in an online game?
A: We plan to support at least 16 human players over the Internet for the PS2 and Xbox versions, possibly more with dedicated server support. For the PC, we plan to support at least 32 human players over the Internet. For LAN games, we plan to support 32 players for the PS2 and Xbox versions, and 64 for the PC version. Of course, the total number of players for any single game will vary with network conditions and hardware performance.

Q: Will you have to use a gamepad for the PC version?
A: Absolutely not. PC players will be able to use the keyboard and mouse just like any other first-person shooter. All controls for the PC version of Star Wars Battlefront will be customizable.

Q: Is there a single player component to Star Wars Battlefront?
A: Yes, single players can play Instant Action battles or play the Galactic Conquest mode. In Galactic Conquest, players can choose any of the four factions and try to take over the galaxy. Players will be able to give commands to their AI teammates in order to lead their side to victory.

Q: Can players choose to play Jedi as a class?
A: No, but Jedi do appear in the game as NPC or AI characters. More info to come later.

Q: Is Star Wars Battlefront using the same engine from an existing game?
A: No, the engine for Star Wars Battlefront is a brand new engine developed by Pandemic Studios.

Q: Will there be voice chat for the PC version?
A: Yes, there will be voice chat for the PC version, as well as the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions. Of course, text chat will also be available in the PC version.

Thanks Anthos. I kinda figured it would be there, but was too busy at the time to check and make sure. It is awesome to hear they are going to have integrated voice support though
