Hintbooks

I dunno about the rest of you, but IMHO, I think the RPG world on consoles has gone downhill since they started releasing the Walkthrough / Hintbook guides. Not to say that the game quality themselves has gotten worse, but they're so freakin' intertwined that you HAVE to cough up the extra $15 if you ever wanna see the entire game. Granted most of them can be beat without the guides, but you start looking through them and you're like "Damn, that's how you get xxxx to join your party", but then you look at what's involved and it's more like "Who in their right mind came up with that?". I think the last game I beat that I actually enjoyed was Wild Arms. Don't get me wrong, I like the newer Final Fantasy lines, but just don't seem to get into them too much, their more eye-cande to me if anything. I think I need some old school RPGin...

The first final fantasy was the best, it was terribly addictive.

I think if I had to choose a favorite out of any RPG I've ever played, it'd have to be Phantasy Star II (Sega) or maybe the Y's series of games (for those who've ever played the old Turbo Grafix system). The first couple Final Fantasy's were pretty fun too - after 3, I just kinda lost the love I had for the series (too much eye candy, not enough story).

Well, I broke down and bought another hintbook today - this time for Wild Arms 3. I'm happy to say I made it through nearly the entire game myself without help, the last few levels are just killing me though. Although I have to admit, looking at the book, there's deffinately a TON of extra stuff I didn't do. For one thing, you can work on these EX File keys (yes, it deals with UFOs and whatnot), not to mention a few extra areas/zones, and even a few "hidden" bosses. GAH! How was I EVER to find that stuff under normal circumstances.

The game does kick arse though (imho) - I actually think I find it funner than the first two of the series (not just graphics, overall gameplay is just great).
