Counterstrike Source on the LAN

This is probably a silly question but I haven't played with HL2 enough so here goes......how do we play CS or HL2 onthe LAN w/o it trying to authenticate to the Steam server? We had some issues this last LAN and were unable to overcome the fact that only 2 people were able to access Steam.

Not sure on the legit side but I have seen on the hack side there is a steam auth disable and enable reg hack...

Steam has an "offline mode" in which any game that is fully updated can be played while not connected to the Internet.

In order to use offline mode, start Steam while not connected to the Internet.

Steam will then ask if you want to use offline mode, it's that simple.

In order to play any game in offline mode, that game's content must be fully downloaded first.

You can check to see how much of a game's content has been downloaded by looking at its Properties page; just right-click on the game's name in your "My Games" list.

ya, but it first requires you to authenticate against their servers first. Our problem was that we couldn't even authenticate against the servers. If we could, then we would have been able to play. I would like to know if the game locks out the port for other people once a couple of people get connected?

Now that's a good question

Another ITEM of note from the same linky link:

All clients that are going to play on the LAN should have unique Steam Accounts. You might also have to assign unique clientports to each computer if they are going to play online as well as offline. Please refer to this FAQ for help in configuring multiple clients behind a router.

Most home DLS and cable connections will only be able to support 6 or 8 players on a 128K uplink and 12 to 16 players on a 256K uplink, assuming that they are using a reasonable rate (7500) and cl_cmdrate (30) settings. You might have to lower the cl_cmdrate to 20.
