Gateway M505X Laptop quote:

All,

I'm about to buy this Gateway M505X Laptop. I'm not a big Gateway fan, but they didn't make this laptop...only reselling it...and so is Gigabyte (not in the US though).

So, I'm just looking for opinions about this type of laptop.
I was originally looking at the Sager NP5680. I want to be able to play NWN on it and do basic things. I don't play FPS. I currently have a desktop with an AMD XP1600 on an ABIT NV7M with built in Nforce2 GPU that I currently use for everything. I can always through a new video card into this box or upgrade the processor to keep this one up to speed when I need it. But I can't do that with a laptop. The question really is, will this type of laptop suite my needs for the next couple of years?

It has the following specs:

quote:
manufacturer Gateway
model name M505X
processor type Intel Pentium M
processor speed 1.4 GHz
LCD screen type active matrix (TFT)
diagonal screen size 15 2/5"
system bus 800 MHz
screen resolution 1280 x 800
memory 512MB
maximum memory upgrade 1024MB
memory type DDR SDRAM
hard drive capacity 40GB
included integrated drives DVD-ROM/CD-RW; memory card reader
ports 1 Ethernet (RJ-45); 2 FireWire; 1 parallel; 1 Type II PC Card; 1 S-video out; 1 video (VGA); 3 USB 2.0; 1 Wi-Fi (802.11b)
graphics/video memory 64MB
graphics/video chip ATI Radeon 9600 graphics
internal modem type 56K ITU V.92
sound hardware type 20-bit sound
speakers integrated with subwoofer
mouse pointer type touchpad
operating system Windows XP Home Edition
software included MS Works 7.0
depth 10 2/5"
width 13 15/16"
thickness 1 3/8"
warranty 1-year parts and labor
average battery life 4 hours
notebook computer weight 6.7 lb

It is $1600 at Office Depot and this week only there is a $200 mail in rebate. Therefore it totals $1400. The Sager is about $1600 and has a faster processor (P4 2.6) and it weighs alot more and has a sucky battery life. Though, I probably wont use it on battery that often (twice a month...though more battery life is nice and it would probably only be used to watch DVD's on a plane). Most of the time I'll probably be setting on the couch surfing the web or playing NWN.

Thanks for the input guys.

Bah, there's no way that Gateway is as multi-use as my Sager. My Sager also servers as a hand warmer at cold weather events

ok...so I bought it. I love it so far. Though, thanks to Office Depot's 14 day no questions asked exchange policy, I had a bad pixel and now I have a new one laptop as of this morning. It is very nice...going to play some games on it this weekend and test out the wireless lan.

I've heard you can melt candy bars on the desk next to a sager. Too bad I bought the gateway, I could have used a spare heater.

Thanks guys
