Question laptop video question quote:

All,

I've started saving for a laptop to game on. I currently only play NWN, but I've played Warcraft3, Dungeon Siege, Diablo2, etc. I never play FPS because I get motion sickness. I will probably be playing NWN for another 6 months at least, unless something better comes out that I don't know about.

So all my reading on the net says that the ATI mobile 9600 pro 128 MB is way better than the nVidia GeForce Go 5600. I would agree with that because the 9600 is a lot newer and was built to overtake the mobile market from nVidia. What I'm wondering is for the type of games that I play, is the ATI worth the extra money?

I've found two laptops that I like:
Sager NP5680 http://www.powernotebooks.com/speci...p3?model_id=286 (which has ATI video and is $1555 with SXGA+, but I'd probably spend $90 more for better display = $1645 UXGA "WideAngle")
Medion MD 40274 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...95&type=product (which has nVidia video and is $1350. The video is XGA.) I had never heard about this brand before I found it on bestbuy's website. Found out that the company is related to the german company ALDI (the supermarket type stores).

The other differences are small. The reason behind getting a laptop instead of another desktop is that I'd like to be able to play anywhere in my house (ex: on the couch, at the table, etc). I thought about getting a shuttle xpc and a 15" flat panel, but it still is a hassle to move it around the house. I occasionally travel with work (and play) and would love to have the portability of a laptop.

Feel free to voice your opinions on the ATI vs nVidia mobile chips and/or the laptops I've picked or other ones you know about. And if anyone knows of anyone that needs some help with computer stuff, let me know.

Will work for money towards laptop fund! I'm about half way there...

Well, like the rodent said, I have a Sager laptop currently. In fact I got it from Powernotebooks even. I would definitely go with the ATI card over the Nvidia one. It's newer and has more horsepower so it will last longer. Plus ATI has really been outperforming Nvidia recently in my opinion. Always go with the max specs you can get on your laptop just to make sure it lasts as long as possible since you can't really upgrade anything but the ram and the harddrive and even then it's expensive.

Also Freex/Momo wanted me to make sure and point out how good of companies Sager and Powernotebooks have been since we got our laptops.
