Entertainment industry attempts quiet runaround
After all of the debate (and eventual MPAA/FCC legal loss) surrounding the FCC's proposed Broadcast Flag (huh?), it appears Hollywood is engaging in a stealth runaround. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the industry has convinced a lawmaker to stuff an amendment into a giant appropriation bill to quietly pass the provision with little public debate. Just saw this over on /. :
"THOMAS, one of the best sources for Congressional action on the Internet has shown that no amendments occured to the CJS Appropriations Bill. Monday, Slashdot covered the EFF announcing a rumor that a senator was attempting to sneak an amendment to bring the Broadcast Flag into law. From THOMAS (scroll down to the bottom): "6/21/2005: Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies. Approved for full committee consideration without amendment favorably." Translation: No one attempted to sneak the Broadcast flag into law."

Yes rumors abound! The article is not why I was concerned. It was the flag itself.

Either way if you read the petition, it did not imply someone trying to sneak anything. It just states that you appose the broadcast flag at any point in the future. So if you do oppose it, you should probably go ahead and make it known to your Congressman.
