Well, since I just for the game on DVD (Collector's Edition don't you know) it is a wonderful game, visually. It took close to 45 minutes to install the game and get it up and running. This is due to the way Valve has decided to protect their game, by doing some sort of encryption on the game files that are pulled off of the DVD when it installs. Once the game files are copied to your computer, STEAM forces you to create an account which then asks for your CD-Key which automatically gets sent to Valve. Once the server responds, it never did respond to me last night due to some sort of problem with the server, it takes the next 15+ minutes to "unpack" the game files. I would assume that this is the process it takes to unencrypt the files so that you can play them. Well, my process to 30+ minutes and on a pretty decent machine I think. I got an AMD Athlon 64 bit proc running at 2.2Ghz. 512MB of ram, 7200 RPM WD drive with 8MB cache. It's no slouch to say sure. But during the entire time, my hard drive was constantly being accessed unpacking the files.
According to the box, it installs 5.5GB of games files for the collector's edition which includes HL2, HL1 and CS all with the new source engine. But still, 5.5GB of information is an A$$ load of stuff to deal with. I was not happy with how long it took to get done.
As long as you understand that when you buy the game on CD/DVD, it is going to take A LONG TIME before you play it, then it isn't too bad. Just be ready for it. I wasn't, no one told me that I would have to deal with this sort of delay before I could see gaming goodness at it's finest. :-)
OK? Have enough information to make a decision? Let me know how your experience goes, I'd like to get another perspective.
Later,
