No I think you're mistaking Dune 2000 with the original Squirre1.
Here's the way things went down:
Dune (Copyright 1992 Cryo)
Mixture between adventure and strategy game, fairly simple and not very successful.
Dune II (Copyright 1992, Westwood Studios) Westwood bought the rights, upgraded the game engine and created the world's first "real-time strategy game".
Command and Conquer (Copyright 1995, Westwood Studios)
A real-time strategy series of computer games released by the game developer Westwood Studios, based on and alternate WWII timeline.
Dune 2000 (Westwood Studios, 1998)
Based around the game engine for Red Alert from Westwood Studios, the game is a remake of Dune 2 using then-current technologies.
Dune and Dune II, were the birth of real-time strategy.
