Yes, you heard me right! No Arnie is not going to be at the next game day. :( For the first time a computer has desinged and manufactured a robot! The computer used an evolution program to desing better and better robots until finally 3 actaully worked ... they crossed a table. What does the industry have in mind for this:
"Down the road, if we could have a thing like this in space, you could send the building blocks and let them evolve themselves," said Yoseph Bar-Cohen, director of a robotics lab at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "That would be fascinating."
Sounds like the beginning a movie I saw! Click Here for the full story.

EPIC And NVidia Unite
- Posted 2:43 PM By Squirre1
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Epic and NVidia announced in a Yahoo Press Release that they will be working more closely together to produce games that will work the Unreal Engine and take advantage of some of the new GeForce features:
Prior to this announcement, Epic Games had already begun targeting major new Unreal Engine features for NVIDIA's GeForce 256 and GeForce2 GTS(TM). One such example is the engine's new high-polygon, large-scale terrain system. This feature specifically exploits the hardware transform and lighting features of the NVIDIA GeForce family of GPUs. Several additional features are planned that line up strategically with current and future NVIDIA 3D graphics processors.
These 2 could really team up well to produce some awesome releases.

Technology nEws you can usE ... maybe?
- Posted 1:50 PM By Rikus Khan
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
I'm gonna do a little tidbit about Tech news, which may not exactly go along with this sites' main focus - multiplayer gamers and the games they play - which I feel may be interesting to us or show a glance of the future (which ... is interesting). I'll not include boring news about Unions Getting Online or Online Shopping Site Ordered to Pay or Volvo's New Crash Alert System. There will be no crap stories in my "nEws you can usE" section. I'll keep it small and try to put it out once a week. But I will not fill it with fluff (of course there is a "Post a Comment" link above the postings so let me have it).
On with the nEws you can usE.
Game Software Used to Treat Cancer Patients.
Their Take: Virtual reality software helps children and adults cope with pain and anxiety problems.
My Take: Bring these kids to game day and let them watch a teammate shoot you in the back ... TargetPractice, RockHound ... thats pain! Anxiety ... Watch as 75 Frankish knights (Mizzouri) mow over your 5 beloved castles and position themselves to kill your king, as your allies busy themselves with a wolf eating their villagers! That is anxiety!
Philips Creates Plastic Computer Screen
Their Take: One day we'll be able to have floppy plastic electonric newspapers.
My Take: One day we could have blowup dolls which I can donwload images for! .. OR .. A monitor the size of my living room wall which I can take to gameday in my pocket!
Sega FINALLY Launches Dreamcast Network
Their Take: The niche market of online mutilplayer computer gamers have gotten a leg up. Dreamcast is offering a high-speed narrow band games only connection to other gamers.
My Take: Well, like Ultima Online ..UO.. (the first massive multi-player online game other than bbs games), the first console system will face, or more likely get hit in the face, the challenges which will help define the industry. With Microsoft's X-Box, PlayStation2, and Nintendo Cube all coming out next year this market is no doubt going to open up. But, just like UO, players are gonna love it and hate it and its gona be a bumby ride; atleast we're moving.
Well that is the first section of "nEws you can usE", take it however you want.

    Duron 750 vs PIII700E

It seems the boys over at PlanetHardware have put up an interesting article comparing AMD's latest chip the Duron 750, with the PIII 700E. With both chips having the same cost it is a good look at "bang for your buck" PC upgrading. Click here to view the article. For all of you overclockers out there, like me, head over to Overclockers.com for some serious performance gains that can be had out of both chips. I do believe that that the PIII700E has a good advantage in this department due to AMD's recent attempts to limit the overclocking of it's latest chips.

    AMD Socket A cooling

The guys over at GamePC.com have dished up an article covering 6 of the top guns in the Socket A cooling arena. I can personally atest to the fact that the Golden Orb sucks, not only is it very hard to mount but my CPU constantly ran at 120F. I then put on a Coolermaster (aluminum) heatsink and my CPU never got above 105F under stress. The only annoyance to the Coolermaster is its noise, it is easily the loudest fan I've ever heard. However, this is a small price to pay for cool temps when my CPU has been overclocked to 880mhz. Click here to read the full article.

    PC Tuning 101 - Part I
    - Posted 12:39 PM By Mizzouri
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
It has come to my attention through the many game days that we have hosted that a good % of gamers have untuned PCs. The first complaint I hear after they plug into the network is that their computer is runing slowly. Sure enough, a little digging into the PC shows blatant system neglect. So, to address this problem I will devote some time to posting links to articles that detail proper PC tuning and write a couple of short pieces that discuss advanced tuning. Please email me with any tips that you hae found along the way that can be passed along. This first article details the use of virtual memory. Click here to read on.

Next Unreal Engine To Use T&L
    - Posted 2:35 PM By Squirre1
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The next Unreal engine, that will be used for Unreal II, will include support for transform & lighting and other GeForce features. Here is a snip of what they had to say:
Prior to this announcement, Epic Games had already begun targeting major new Unreal Engine features for NVIDIA's GeForce 256 and GeForce2 GTS(TM). One such example is the engine's new high-polygon, large-scale terrain system. This feature specifically exploits the hardware transform and lighting features of the NVIDIA GeForce family of GPUs. Several additional features are planned that line up strategically with current and future NVIDIA 3D graphics processors. As part of their efforts to work more closely together, NVIDIA will provide Epic with early versions of new hardware and drivers, as well as extensive testing of those drivers with existing Unreal Engine products and new unreleased versions of the engine. To facilitate this, the agreement calls for regular technical reviews and exchanges between the two companies, so that each one has a clear understanding of the inner workings of the other's software and hardware technology.
