CSHP(Client Server Hack Protection) for Unreal Tournament is on the move again. With their most recent release 4a, they are going to see if they can compile a list of cheaters. They are also trying to put some code into the protection that if you are caught using a cheat, it may make you have to re-installed UT. Well, if you would like more information, you can go to the CSHP site here.

New Deus Ex Multi-Patch
- Posted 7:42 PM By BurnPilot
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Ion Storm has released 3 new patches for what was easily the best game they released last year (how hard could it be to top Daikatana?). There are patches for the single player version, a multiplayer patch (this should be the main interest of those who enjoy the gameday events), and an sdk patch. All the patches fix multiple bugs, especially the multiplayer one. You can find these from most major gaming sites or simply click here to download them and view a list of the bugs that were fixed from GameSpy Daily. Also if you have Deus Ex and haven't tried it multiplayer, I really recommend it. The team play mode is great, and one of the most satisfying feelings in the world is hurling throwing knives at an enemy's head. Of course that's after I've set them on fire with the flamethrower and they are running around in a panic trying to put themselves out :)

My Trireme Sank Your Battleship

That might actually be a statement you'll hear once Empire Earth comes out. Empire Earth is poised to blow the scale of previous games out of the water, much like a current naval vessel would waste the best the Romans ever made. You'll be able to start off with early humans and help them advance all the way to present day and beyond. The game is being published by Sierra Studios and looks very promising. You have to wonder though, exactly how much of a chance Uggh the Neanderthal has against a highly trained soldier, picture it.....
Uggh starts to walk toward Sgt. John Smith of the 3rd Infantry carrying his trusty stick. As he approaches Sgt. Smith hurls a grenade at him, it hits Uggh in the head and falls to the ground. Uggh promptly picks up the grenade and thinks it is food. He tries to bite it only to realize that it is really hard. He tries smashing it with his stick, still no affect. He picks up a big rock and tries to smash it. At that precise moment the grenade, which has the longest fuse in history, goes off and blows Uggh to that peaceful Neanderthal place in the sky.
At least it would be funny to watch. If you want to learn more, head on over to the the game's web site.

Re-live the Olden Days, Read a Magazine

The new PCGamer print magazine has an awesome article about the upcoming Unreal 2 (scheduled 2Q 2002). The article is not on their website as of today, but I recommend checking it out. The article goes into great depth about the new storyline, gives some cool character screenshots, and covers the new storyline. If I get a chance this weekend (still painting and building at the new house), I will also try and cover some of their reviews; they have a list of the 20 weirdest games of all times (Scooby and maybe Rikus would remember "Armed and Dangerous" from the time Scooby was crashing at our pad).

Counter Strike 1.1 News

Well, as I found out on Counter-Strike.net version 1.1 of the linux server is out. You can head straight to their downloads page to pick this up. Looks like all you rabid Counter Strike fans will half to wait a while for the Windows Client update, well actually they expect it tomorrow but it may seem like a while if you're really into the game. One of the things that impressed me is the new character models, it's nice to see that they can do so much with the Quake 2 engine. As for you who don't play the game whatever you do, DO NOT START BECAUSE IT WILL SUCK YOUR LIFE AWAY. Ok, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but it certainly is fun. And on a final note, Valve plans to release a new Half-Life patch sometime this week too.

Including the game which is now gold, as in it's gone gold. As reported on every major website including Game Spy Daily, it should be in stores around the 27th. That's right, one of the games that you thought wouldn't come out till pigs flew is actually almost here. You can check out more info about the game here. Judging from how long it took this game to be released, it does make me curious thought as to what kind of freaky stuff might happen if Duke Nukem Forever ever sees the light of day.

Official word of Tribes 2 going gold was released today at Stomped! Here's the press release:

BELLEVUE, WA (March 19, 2001) - Sierra today announced that TRIBES(tm) 2 (www.tribes2.com), Dynamix's eagerly awaited sequel to the 1999 Online Action/Strategy Game of the Year* StarSiege(r) TRIBES(tm), has gone gold. Offering PC gamers massive and breathtaking worlds for exploration and battle, as well as unprecedented innovations in team-based, tactical gameplay, TRIBES 2 is set to take over store shelves around the world first week of April.

"TRIBES 2 is revolutionary not only for its gameplay, but for its community-building features, such as forums, e-mail, IRC, news, tribes/player pages and in-game voice," said Lee Rossini, marketing director at Sierra. "Now gamers can start their own tribe, recruit members, communicate with them, make MODs and participate in the Tribes 2 community without ever having to leave the game."

"We're looking forward to seeing how players tear into this game," said Dave Georgeson, senior producer/director at Dynamix. "There's an amazing amount of features in TRIBES 2 and I can't wait to see all the combinations of strategies and tactics that players develop. I think we have something here that can really create a whole new attitude towards gaming once folks are able to get involved with serious teams of 60+ people in a game."

Serious Sam Hits Shelves Today
- Posted 10:44 AM By Krogue
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
A few months back, the internet community started getting all abuzz about a game called Serious Sam. It was being developed by a group of Croatian game developers, in a war torn area of the world, and basically in their garage. The buzz was that the game offered awesome first person shooter gameplay, running on their own developed engine. The graphics were outstanding and the storyline unique.

Well, today in software stores across the U.S., gamers will get to see for themselves how well Croteam pulled it off.

From their website, these are just some of the standout features of the game:
  • Powerful 3d technology and advanced tools

  • Serious Sam is powered by 'Serious engine' featuring state of the art technology including:
    1. Both complex indoor and outdoor scenes in one engine,
    2. Multiple direction gravity,
    3. Advanced LOD for loads of enemies at the same time,
    4. Directional light for daylight scenes,
    5. Portals and mirrors,
    6. Truly dynamic volumetric fog and haze,
    7. Both skinned and multi-part models combined,
    8. Hyper-texturing and hyper-mapping for life-like richly detailed environments,
    9. High polygon count multi-resolution meshes,
    10. Photo-realistic lens flares with real-time lens reflections,
    11. Advanced particle system,
    12. Procedural textures (water, fire, smoke, plasma, electricity),
    13. Photo-realistic reflections, specularity and bumps,
    14. Up to 4 split screen support,
    15. Easy-to-use real-time development tools (Serious editor, Serious Modeler, and custom AI language based on C++).
For a complete list see Engine Features.

  • Fighting with loads of enemies at the same time (high-adrenaline arcade-feel action)

  • Serious Sam is filled with loads of enemies. This is possible with the latest engine technology. It is possible to have 50+ enemies in one scene, with everyone firing, running, jumping and screaming at the same time. This feature is not extensively used in any 3D action so far, because technology didn't allow it. But, with our Serious engine this is now possible. It is used primarily in open spaces, where it is possible to put hundreds of enemies in one playground.

  • Both huge outdoor and indoor environments

  • All levels in the game are vast. The engine was designed to support both indoor and outdoor areas in a creative mixture, with each level spreading on up to 1000 cubic miles. There is a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor environments. The indoor levels are done with rendering techniques more powerful than other present engines. Outdoor sections are new and never before seen in any other FPS. They are big, long and provide hours of just walking and days of playing.

  • Bright and beautiful surroundings

  • In Serious Sam there are very bright and easy-to-see levels. This is possible because of newest 3d technology which allows complex architecture, multi-texturing, sunlight, ...
You don't have to adjust brightness/contrast to properly see the scenes, and the scenery/architecture provides visual pleasure while playing the game.

  • Multiple gravity

  • Our newest technology allows having multiple gravity in one room. This means you can fight with enemies who are jumping from one wall to the other, or ambushing you from the ceiling. At the same time, you can jump to ceiling or throw a grenade up. This grenade will bounce UP to the ceiling (normal grenade would bounce down to the floor). This situation is only one example of the numerous that can be done with this feature. Multiple gravity has got great, unexplored potential for single-play and for the multi-play as well. This feature is never before seen in any other game.

  • Multi-player 2-4 split screen support

  • To add to usual multi-player options, the engine is enabled with split screen options allowing up to 4 players playing on a single computer. If you have Dual-head technology, it is possible for two players to play each on his/hers own monitor

MWGL Gains Valuable Experience In 1st Outing

Last night, the MWGL put its feet in the murky waters of online team competition. And as it turns out, there are a lot of people out there that play Unreal Tournament Team Deathmatch a whole lot.

We ended up playing 3 v 3 Team Deathmatch, instead of 4 v 4, because of a lack of available players (Qwest is still yanking my DSL chain, so my 24k Netzero connection at work is all I've got.) In our first game we got spanked a mere 195 to 5 (woo-hoo we got 5). In the second game we had a little trouble with staying alive. It turns out that if the enemy can't kill you enough, you can always do the job yourself (jumping into the green radioactive stuff is a quick way to Hades). We went down in flames, 169 to 0 was the registered score (although the official number was 169 to -8).

Our next foray into the morass is Thursday night with Unreal Tournament Capture the Flag. We are going to practice tonight at around 8:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Hop into the #mwgl IRC channel if you want to play. Right now the CTF team roster is made up of:
    Rikus Khan
    Sir Raven
    Squirre1
    Krogue
    Kagato
    Burnpilot
If you are interested in playing either UT Team Deathmatch or UT Capture the Flag, please let Squirre1 know. These teams are open to anyone who is willing to play under the MWGL banner. We are not elitist or snobby, we welcome anyone of any skill level to join us for the fun. Times for games are always changing, so the more people who are interested in playing, the easier it is to find a timeslot for everyone to play. Also, please let us know your intentions as soon as possible, that way if we need to back out of some of the league events, we can let the organizers know in advance so they can take us out of the scheduling.

    Operation Flashpoint Demo Out

Just yesterday I found out while visiting Adrenaline Vault that the wonderful people from Codemasters released a demo of Operation Flashpoint. For those of you who haven't heard of this game here's a brief description. Basically it's like Rogue Spear meets graphics and play style meet Tribes levels, all set in the Cold War era. The cool addition is vehicles. The demo is something I would definitely recommend for any fan of Rogue Spear. It's only one level with no multiplay, but I had an extremely enjoyable time playing it. Midway through the demo I actually killed a couple Russians who jumped out of their jeep then proceeded to steal said jeep and run over their comrad who had started to run up the road without noticing me, now if I can only find out how to steal the tank :) If you want to give the demo a try you can get it from Avault or FilePlanet. In the full game you will be able to drive tanks, jeeps, random parked cars, and fly helicopters. With some luck the full version of the game will hopefully be in stores in May.

    CTF Match Postponed
    - Posted 2:28 PM By Krogue
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The Unreal Tournament CTF Match that was scheduled for last night was postponed due to a scheduling conflict with the other team. The new night for the match is next Wendnesday, March 28th. We are assuming that it will be later in the evening, around 9:00 - 9:30, but we will let everyone know when it is set.

We are still looking for people to play in both the Team Deathmatch and the Capture the Flag league games. Let Squirre1 know if you are interested in either group. The schedule for games is set for Team Deathmatch on Tuesday nights, and Capture the Flag on Thursday nights. Right now, we are having problems finding people who can play. Some of our original people who wanted to play, have found out that their school and/or work schedules won't allow it. So, we hope that some of you out there will be able to help out by filling in.

MWGL Sets Personal Team Frag Record
    - Posted 5:41 PM By Krogue
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The MWGL set a new personal best, scoring 81 net kills, in its two deathmatch games last night. OK, so we still didn't win, but it sure the hell beat the 5 net kills we had last week. The final score was 316 to 81, but would have been much higher if I hadn't had to make a mid game substitution for Solid Steel. He was kicking ass in the first game with over 30 kills, but was not able to play the second game due to illness, so I had to take over. Lets just say that out of the 81 net kills our team got, I accounted for 0% of those. Never said TDM was my kind of game. The rest of the MWGL team last night was made up of Sir Raven, Squirre1, and Burn Pilot. The other three putting up a much better show than I.

But, we are having a great time and would love to see more of you join us for the games. We are supposed to have a couple of CTF games this week, one tonight and one Thursday night. Stop by the MWGL chat room at #mwgl on irc.enterthegame.com, and let us know if you are interested.

    MWGL Wins First CTF Game

Yeah, you read that right. Last night we won our CTF match. Of course it did help that the other team decided they didn't have the time to play. But that is okay, a win is a win.

Our next CTF game is scheduled for Friday night against "Extreme Fraggers". We will be playing sometime around 9:00 pm CST. Jump in the MWGL IRC room that night if you want to play.

Also, as a side note, if you do come in the IRC room and no one answers you immediately, stay around. We are probably in a game playing, so hang out in there and we will IM you when we get back.

Tomorrow night, after the CTF game, I will start playing Tribes 2 and continue doing so religiously all weekend. If you want to play, let me know in IRC (#mwgl).

If you want to see some of the box art, or are interested to know more about the game, the best site I have found is Tribal War.
