Neverwinter Nights Patch v1.27
- Posted 9:41 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Still playing Neverwinter Nights? If you are and haven't run the auto-updater for awhile, it may be worth your while to grab the new patch (version 1.27) that Bioware has released. There's a hole slew of new fixes and updates that have been addressed. As is the norm-to-date with previous patches, any modules you make or games saved with this version will get tagged as requiring v1.27 to play, so there's no going back (unless you download the 1.26 Revert Patch).

Team Freeze 2003 Release For UT2003

Looking for an interesting change of pace in Unreal Tournament 2003? Then give the newly released Team Freeze 2003 a run. Granted it still boils down to running around and killing the opponent, this mod adds a bit of twist to the game. Rather than being killed outright by weapon fire, the player is frozen. Once frozen, you have two options : 1) A fellow teammate comes to thaw you out, 2) You get turned into a gib-sicle when their entire team is frozen.

I imagine a few (if not quite a few) of you folks have already been running the "unnoficial" release of the new Detonator v41.09 series of drivers. Just as an FYI, Nvidia has officially released the new series today and can be found in your favorite flavor.

Win2K/XP
Win95/98/ME

No log on what's changed yet, but does that really matter to most? I mean, come on, they're NEW!

- Posted 4:55 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
While it's not as good as having the real thing, the folks at Unreality have a working list of what is expected to be fixed in the upcoming patch from Epic. Here's a snip of the entire list (view the entire list here or click on the "Read More..." below):

Engine:
- Memory leak fixes: Explicitly destroy KarmaParams in Actor:ostScriptDestroy, and
- 'new' KarmaParamsSkel instead of using BeginObject
- Fix for crash with per-tri karma collision with static meshes with no collision data

D3D/OpenGL:
- fixed z- pixel fog and favored it over vertex fog
- worked around vertex fog driver bug on ATI cards
- added workarounds for S3 cards like the Savage 4
- added OverrideDesktopRefreshRate option (defaults to false)

Audio
- fixed occlusion if EAX 3.0 is enabled

**UPDATE** If you're willing to take the chances, you can download Beta 2 of the v2153 Patch.

MTV To Feature "Fatality"
- Posted 5:36 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
According to news over at Avault, the folks at MTV's "True Life" show will be filming episode based on Johnathan "Fatality" Wendel’s upcoming fragging adventures in this winter’s CPL Pentium 4 Processor Event. Word:
We've followed his pro gaming career with interest and reported on his every step. Now Johnathan "Fatality" Wendel is going to reach an even broader audience through television. The CPL has received preliminary confirmation that MTV will be filming Wendell's progress through the CPL's Pentium 4 Processor Winter 2002 Event. The producers of the one-hour documentary series "True Life" will track him through the entire event - from practice to aftermath. The show will focus on the Unreal Tournament 2003 Winter Championship.
Now if all of us gamers could collectively come together and all watch the episode, perhaps we could break the ratings of the Osborne's.

Nvidia Introduces Unified Linux Drivers
- Posted 6:09 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
While many will sing the praises of running Linux on your machine, one thing many may agree on is the sometimes lack of drivers provided by manufacturers. Nvidia has apparently taken this to heart and realized the need to support the non-MS folk and has therefore announced a Unified driver set for *NIX users. The drivers cover the current IA32 (Athlon and PentiumX) architecture, as well as Intel's IA64 and AMD's 64 bit architectures. If you'd like to skip the news and aim straight for the drivers, they can be downloaded from Nvidia's Driver Page.
The new driver includes support for CineFX, the new graphics chip design powering Nvidia's recently unveiled GeForce FX and subsequent generations of graphics chips. The driver also supports upcoming high-end processors from Advanced Micro Devices.
I like the fact that they even include BSD support.

Sierra To Develope Tribes 3?
- Posted 7:00 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
I imagine one should take this more as just rumor until an official announcement is made, but according to some comments by Tribes brand manager Alex Rodberg, it may be a possibility.
Looking forward, we must rely on our (and your) ability to discern what was fun and what wasn't about all the Tribes games (and even other games) and end up with a finished product that is both new and familiar at the same time. I'm confident in the team we have assembled for this daunting task. I can't wait to introduce you to them so we can get fans involved in the process as early as possible. When? When we make the official announcement, sometime next year.
Let's hope they just learned their lessons from the last time and actually deliver a product that's a bit more stable (i.e. runs on more than 10% of gamers machines) than Tribes 2.

Vietcong Demo

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
War themed games seem all the rage these days, specially in the FPS market, and the folks at Illusion Softworks are hard at work on a new one tiled Vietcong. As you can somewhat deduce from the titles name, this one does not take place during World War II *gasp*, but rather the (less than popular) Vietnam War. For those looking to give the game a try, they've released a new MultiPlayer Demo for your enjoyment. The 72MB download simply notes that you get "Death Match, Capture the Flag, Protect the Pilot up to 32 Players". You can snag your copy from the following mirrors:

Intel's 'Turbo DDR 400'
- Posted 9:44 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Planning on updating that aging gaming rig anytime soon? If you're planning on Intel being at the heart of the machine, you may hold off a bit longer as it appears Intel is planning on releasing a 'Turbo DDR 400' version of the upcoming Canterwood chipset. This chipset is loaded with a slew of new features aimed at the gamers and performance enthusiasts market.
More details have emerged about this Turbo mode. It lets system level performance be tweaked, but only operates on 800MHz system buses and using DDR (double data rate) 400. Intel is telling its customers that they can expect a performance increase on multiple system level benchmarks, with fast silicon and special manufacturing allowing lower latency paths from the system bus to the 4GB of system memory.
Isn't technology great?

Panzer Dragoon Orta Preview
- Posted 9:48 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
If you own an Xbox, you're more than likely counting the days until this game hits the market, in the meantime, the folks at GameSpy have their preview of Panzer Dragoon Orta posted. Word:
First thing's first: the graphics and general aesthetics are beautiful. The unique, alien Panzer Dragoon motif is alive and well on the Xbox, and now its quality shines through all the more brightly since it's no longer compromised by underpowered hardware. The game runs at a constant 60 frames per second, with an extremely long viewing distance and wonderfully detailed environments. Judged on a strictly technical level, Orta is among the most accomplished games on the Xbox. Judged on sheer artistry, it's clearly the best.
There are times I'm glad I never gave into the urge to buy an Xbox, but then I see games/titles like this and just have to give myself a swift kick.

Visiontek Going ATI?
- Posted 11:17 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Well, apparently the folks at Visiontek aren't quite dead yet. Word has it that they are on their way back to market, only this time round they'll be producing ATI based adapters instead of Nvidia. Word
ATI Technologies appointed Hartford's VisionTek division as a "Premium Retail Partner" for North America. Hartford will offer a complete line-up of video graphics products based on ATI's RADEON family of VPU's with products ranging from entry-level graphics solutions to high-end gaming products for the hardcore PC enthusiast. Hartford plans to make its new line of XTASY graphic products available through leading retailers and e-tailers in the first quarter of 2003. VisionTek's graphics products will come with a limited lifetime warranty and toll free technical support. Hartford is honoring all XTASY retail product warranties to consumers who purchased VisionTek retail packaged products in the past and they are continuing to provide toll-free technical support on all current XTASY retail products purchased from VisionTek's retailers.
I like how they have the same Xtasy logo on their webpage, but with the ATI badge instead, great way to save some marketing bucks.

DirectX 9.0 Released
- Posted 9:46 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
After a bit of delay since the last announced release date, the folks you love to hate (that would be Microsoft), have released DirectX 9.0. Being that I've really never kept up-to-date and all, I'm not sure what all new technologies they're introducing in the new version (you know, things like vertex shaders and what have you) and can't find a link on their site that gives insight, but who cares, IT'S NEW!

**UPDATED** Appears as if this was a slip-up on Microsoft's end, somebody apparently found the link before they decided to launch. Here's a new link for a direct download.

New BF1942 Map - Coral Sea
- Posted 6:19 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    1 Comment | Add
Electronic Arts and DICE have released a new map for Battlefield 1942, titled Coral Sea. Included with this new map is an additional file for those who wish to run a server for the new map. Word:
Coral Sea is an exciting new map set in the Pacific theater. The action is fast and furious as players test their piloting skills with a total of 24 planes available on the map. The action isn't limited to dogfighting however as each side has a carrier that they need to defend at all costs. To win, you'll need to sink the enemy carrier, and then fly through a buoy that appears amidst the wreckage of the ship. Throw in some land-based AA guns and a defensive gun or two in the mix, and you've got our latest recipe for a great Battlefield 1942 holiday treat!
I hope they continue this trend and release more maps for the masses.

RTCW Interview
- Posted 5:41 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The folks at Computer&VideoGames sit down to talk with id CEO Todd Hollenshead to discuss things such as the various console ports of RTCW as well as their upcoming PC title, Enemy Territory. Word:
With Enemy Territory relying a lot on AI in single player, what kind of developments have you been making in this field?

Hollenshead: We've taken a lot of the original Wolf AI - which we thought did an excellent job of emulating what human behaviour would be like in those circumstances. There are certain things you can get away with in Zombie behaviour, they just come at you mindlessly. But soldiers present a different challenge and we're in the process of adding several elements to that side of things at the moment. But single player is really still just at a pre-alpha stage right now as we've been focussing mainly on the multiplayer game till now. The biggest challenge for us is having a team that you command that are independent enough to act realistically but not be too advanced that they just go off without you and complete the objectives.
You know, in this day and age of the FPS genre, does anybody really play single player? Haven't we learned by now that the stories all suck and the game engine was meant to be used for fraggin'.

New Technology To Thwart DoS Attacks
- Posted 7:46 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
While not really gaming related, you're favorite gaming sites have probably gone a round or two with this beast in the past and it's nice to see work being done to shore up network defenses. Now comes word that Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT - Japanese phone company), has invented new technology to prevent distributed denial of service attacks.
It works, the paper said, by using bridge devices which can detect the source of attacks and prevent access to these while allowing other data to continue to flow across the network.

The bridge devices query the data streaming in when an attack occurs, and sniff for similar suspicious data further up the the internet, eventually identifying the source of the attack.
Now if only they could beef it up to dispatch the feds after the source is located, haha.

16X DVD Writing By 2004
- Posted 7:52 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Just when you thought new DVD burners like Pioneer's newly announced/released A05 (4X DVD-R) were the hottest thing on the market, there comes word that Mitsubishi Electric Corp. plans to introduce 16X capable DVD burners by 2004.
MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CORP. has developed a more powerful semiconductor laser that should pave the way for 16X DVD writers to be commercially available from 2004.

The new laser is able to deliver pulses of light at a power of 200 milliwatts, which is double that of lasers used in today's 4X DVD writer drives, the Tokyo company said this week.
Talk about smoking! Just imagine what the proliferation will be like as media gets cheaper, copying a DVD would cost you $1.50 and about 5 minutes of your time. Isn't technology great?!
