Hey all, sorry for the downtime. My ISP is local worked hard to get the service back in place. The storms around here were not very cooperative. Obviously we are back up and everything should be back to normal...

I am currently working on a new site design that is not far from being completed. If there is anything you would like to see added to the site. Go ahead and drop me a email and tell me what you would like to see...

Thanks,

Okay, I realize this is a little bit off topic, but this is a topic that I am very sensitive about. I was browsing around on kcgeek and I found a link to an article in the Library of Congress. Apparently (if I'm reading this right) this proposed act, known as the Universal Military Training and Service Act of 2001, will require "Every male person residing in the United States who is between the ages of 18 and 22 is to receive basic military training and education as a member of the armed forces." How about not. Read on...

New Wolfenstein Maps
- Posted 8:52 AM By Krogue
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Two new Wolfenstein maps were released this last weekend.
Power Dam by Nemos: Make sure you read the readme.txt on this one to get the full storyline. This map looked pretty sweet from my limited run around. You can download it here at Download Power Dam from Fileplanet.

Downtown by Kreep: Okay, this map is still in the beta stages, but if you want to see a work in progress, or you are simply tired of all the other maps, check it out. It isn't much; 2 buildings, lots of open spaces, and the same textures repeated over and over, but hey, it's a start. Get it at Blaster's Map Central
Check these maps out and let us know what you think about them in the forums.

  • Credits, to everyone who helped in helpfile
  • Yes, I'm finally posting again after spending all of last week fighting a very bad case of the flu - yay!

The folks at TechTV have thrown together a great Video Highlight clip featuring may of todays popular online games like Anarchy Online(sux0rz), Dark Age of Camelot, Jumpgate, and DarkSpace. In the review, the narrator talks about different aspects of each game, how well their launches went, and even poke fun of some of the game's storylines and plots (*gasp* As if most MMORPG players care about story, we all know it's about the Phat L3wts!).

    Tribes 2 Auto Maps
    - Posted 12:06 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Not sure how many Tribes 2 players are out there (hey, it's actually fairly stable when updated with the newest patches), but those who are may be interested to know that Tribes2Maps.com has released the first public version of their Tribes 2 Map Autodownload System. Word:
Welcome to the first public release of the Tribes2Maps.com AutoDownload System. This is a combination Tribes 2 script and Visual Basic application. The two pieces work together to enable your Tribes 2 client to automatically download maps from www.Tribes2Maps.com when you attempt to join a game server that is running a client-side map which you do not have installed.

For the techies in the crowd, here's how the system works: The T2 script has a package which hooks into the common dialog functions. When you join a client-side map which you don't have installed, it traps the error that is normally displayed and detects which .ter or .dif file is missing from your T2 installation. It then connects to Tribes2Maps.com via a standard HTTP connection and passes the missing filename and the map name to a CGI script. That CGI script searches the Tribes2Maps.com database and returns the map VL2 file which your client is missing. The catch is that the T2 scripting language can't write binary data to the disk (for security reasons) so the map is downloaded in UUencoded ASCII format. That's where the VB application comes in. The VB app monitors the disk drive, watching for downloaded maps, then converts them to their original binary VL2 format. Once the T2 script sees that the VL2 has been converted, it loads the VL2 and asks you if you want to rejoin the server. That's it!
For those who are still into Tribes 2, this looks to be a pretty cool idea/system.

    Impressions of Dungeon Siege Beta
    - Posted 11:02 AM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Unless you've been living under a rock for that past year, if someone were to mention the name Dungeon Siege, you'd have a clue as to what they're talking about. If the name doesn't ring a bell, just know that Dungeon Siege is an upcoming action/RPG game from Microsoft and Gas Powered Games. Why do I mention it? Well, the folks over at Packmule.org has posted a preview, actually it's more like a listing of their impressions, of the upcoming game. They cover such topics as the game's graphics, performance, moving around, and getting started, fighting basics, and more. Snip:
How much you micromanage battles is largely dependent on your game speed settings and how often you use the pause button. You can simply set your characters to "attack freely, move freely" and click somewhere near an enemy and let them handle it with the weapons you've selected (while you enjoy some zoomed in carnage), or you can slow the game down a bit and tell them each which enemy to attack, use specific spells and weapons on each enemy, etc. My personal favorite method is to select only my main character, put the rest on follow and then charge in with one character letting the rest fend for themselves. Hitting the "Health" potion key during a battle causes all party members below 50% health (except packmules who don't have hands to be able to drink from bottles) to stop and drink a health potion. Similarly, hitting the "Mana" potion key will tell your needy party members to gulp a mana potion. Of course, while they're drinking they won't be able to do anything else - but they replenish as they begin drinking, so you don't have to worry that they'll die by the time they finish drinking. Additionally, you don't have to worry about wasting potions because they'll drink only as much as they need. At the beginning of the game, health potions are almost ridiculously abundant. However, as you progress you'll find yourself running out more quickly and being forced to be more careful.
I'm just hoping this doesn't turn out to be another Tribes 2, lotta hype, lotta delays, little end product.

Evening, kids. Was kinda surfin around and saw an article on Planet Quake about The Dark Conjunction. They have released their demo and it rocks! I played it for a little while, and was fairly immersed in it. The graphics are good and it runs very smoothly (even on my old cruddy laptop). The enemies look very well rendered and they are fairly difficult, so this is not recommended for newbies. The weapons could use a little work, but overall I like it. There are a few screenshots on Planet Quake, so go check them out.

Well, I've seen this about 14 million other places, so I thought I might as well say something here. Blizzard has released their Warcraft III beta CDs. It is scheduled for release this summer. I found some screenshots of the game on GameSpot, so take a look. The graphics look really good, and the storyline (as taken from Blizzard's site) seemed fairly easy to follow and almost even interesting. They also have some screenshots, and they look jsut as good as any others.

    V.Control 1.70Beta Released

Still running your gaming rig off of a 3dfx (Voodoo) video adapter? Then be sure to grab the newest release of V.Control (v1.70 beta) as it has just been released. For those who have never used this handy utility, it's basically an all-purpose tweaking package (registry tweaks, overclock, etc.) for all things 3dfx. The new version fixes/adds the following:
  • Nailed that nasty bug that prevented V.Control from loading and eating up cpu power.
  • Added an option to make the desktop use small icons. For those who want to run V.Control once and exit, try: "v_ctrl.exe runonce"
  • Just to make sure you have the hardware, V.Control supports the 3dfx Voodoo Banshee, 3dfx Velocity, 3dfx Voodoo3, 3dfx Voodoo4, and 3dfx Voodoo5 (like I said, pretty much everything 3dfx).

If you liked the walkthrough posted yesterday, but found that it didn't give up all the secrets to be found throughout the levels, take a look at this Serious Sam SE Secret's Guide. It is not as thorough as yesterday's walkthrough, but it does have all the secrets listed (including the answer to the glowing letters in the first level). Okay, the downside is that it does not have the last three levels completed yet, but it is continually being updated with new secrets as they are found. Hope you enjoy.

    Doom III Music is Good

I was mad because there is no Doom III (tentatively titled) demo out as of yet. But what I saw today made me happy. Apparently Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails fame, and my favorite artist) has a verbal agreement with id to do the music for Doom III, just like he did for the original Quake. Makes me a very happy camper. For those of you who don't know who Nine Inch Nails are (ie. been living under a rock for the last ten years), you can check out some of his stuff either here or here. The second is my personal favorite.

Ok, so it's not one of those cheesy tv commercials promising you a college degree through the mail. Actually, according to this article over at Adrenaline Vault, the University of Washington is going to be offering a Certificate Program in Game Development. Aspiring game developrs take note:
For the first time, the University of Washington is offering a Certificate Program in Game Development, designed to prepare computer programmers who know the C++ programming language to enter professional careers in this field. This 12-month evening program is designed to introduce students to the vocabulary, philosophy, and tools necessary to create computer and video games. There is a required classroom sequence of four noncredit courses, where each 30-hour course meets three hours per week for 10 weeks. 36 students are currently enrolled in this first iteration of the program.
I just hope the professionals teaching these courses can keep up-to-date, after all, the gaming biz is like everything else, constantly changing and improving.

What do you get when you cross an old arcade classic like Sega's Space Harrier with the likes of software like Typing Tutor? You get Space Harrier Typing, a game much like Sega's other recent ttile of Typing of the Dead. Rather than getting trigger finger from firing the gun all day, you get to use a keyboard instead, basically typing in phrases to "fire" at the enemy. I think I've mentioned this title in the past, but only mention it again becasue there's now a playable demo available for download.

    ATI Radeon 8500 128MB

So, I was talking to Squirrel last night, and he was berating me for even considering one of the new GeForce 4's. He went on and on about the ATI Radeon 8500's and how they were heads and tails above the GeForces for price and quality. Well, for once he was right. The ATI Radeon 8500 is a sweet card, but the really exciting news is that come March, the 8500 gets a whole ass-load shot of adrenaline. Premiering in March, the new ATI Radeon 8500's and 8500LE's (The LE comes w/o flat panel display support) will be chocked full of 128 Megs of DDR RAM. So, not only will these cards have one of the best processors available, they will also have more on-board memory than my computer at work. Check out the stats and FAQ at ATI Technologies. And to top it off the FAQ says the MSRP for the 8500LE will be only $199.00, and only $299.00 for the 8500. I think this may be an Easter Present to myself.

To activate the cheat codes press the Shift, Alt, and A keys (all at the same time) while in the Main Menu.

While playing a mission, hold down the keys listed below to use the wanted cheat:
  • Alt, C - allows access to all missions at the selection screen when you choose campaign missions.
  • Alt, K - free building - no resources required.
  • Alt, X - 100 popularity and adds 1000 gold.
  • Not that I condone the use of cheats, but those that have not played the game in awhile may find renewed interest.

Fans and players of the ever-popular Half-Life mod CounterStrike may get a kick outta this. Found this little gem over at GeekNews:
If you play CS, you may know that you can jump on top of another player and stand on top of him. Well, these guys took that to the extreme by assembling a "man-tower" on de_aztec by stacking all 32 players on top of each other. A rare show of teamwork on the public servers, I might add."
You can see what they're talking about here and here. Then when they got it all done, they blew it to pieces. More screenshots and info can be found here.

    Adaptec's Serial ATA Controllers Announced

Well, it's not really game related, but gamers alike should be excited by the this report of Adaptec's announcement reguarding their movement into the product of Serial ATA controllers. Serial ATA, at least as it appears on paper, should prove to be a great leap for IDE users. Here's a short snip:
The controller also features Adaptec's robust SCSI driver model to smooth the migration path from SCSI to Serial ATA, extend ATA scalability beyond four drives, deliver robust capabilities such as hot plug and hot swap, and leverage existing operating system infrastructures for faster time-to-market. The Serial ATA chip, which is compatible with add-in RAID controller cards for external storage subsystems, will serve as the foundation for a family of Adaptec full-featured PCI RAID products.
Serial ATA may finally break my SCSI craving of over 12 years (what can I say, I love having 12 HDDs chained off of one controller). Time will tell but it definately looks like a promising jump forward.

    Hitachi Goes Water-Cooled

Anyone who's attended a LAN Party has probably seen a few PC's modded out the wazzu and equipped with a water-cooling setup. You've also probably seen some show up who prefer the ease of portability by bringing a laptop. Well, the fine folks at Hitachi have decided to combine the two technologies. That's right folks, Hitachi has developed a prototype notebook that uses a water-based solution to cool down its Pentium 4 processor. Best of all is that they are planning to commercialize the product for corporate users sometime in the third quarter of this year. It's a great idea, considering the extremely limited area laptops have to move head with the old air-cooled style setup they user currently, especially considering the heat today's CPUs throw out. Another advantage besides providing better CPU cooling is that you'll also have a quiter unit as well.

    Fraps v1.7

Do you have a favorite OpenGL or DirectX game that doesn't have built-in support to show how many FPS you're pushing, but you'd realy like to know? Then go grab a copy of Fraps, a handly little framerate monitoring tool. Version 1.7 includes the following updates/fixes:
  • Fraps now draws the counter for all DirectX and OpenGL games using simple polygons to ensure minimal overhead. The performance hit of running Fraps with your game should be under 1% in all circumstances.
  • Because of the above change, some older games (DirectX7 or earlier) that used to crash now work fine.
  • Advanced options have been added. It is now possible to disable the hotkeys for Screen Capture and Manual Logging. This is useful if your game already uses these keys for another purpose.
  • For the hardcore benchmarkers there is now the option to save the framerate to file every second. The log starts as soon as the first frame is drawn, and ends when no frame has been rendered for 10 seconds. You can take the results and import them into a spreadsheet to calculate whatever distributions/variances you like.
  • You can get more information by visiting their FAQ Section.
