RavenSoft has released a render of the new MP5SD to be intergrated in the new SoF II patch soon to be released. For those of you who have played Counter-Strike, you should be familiar with the MP5. Now enter the MP5SD, where the SD stands for Sound Dampened. The rumor is that the MP5SD will have the same hit count as the MA4. I guess we will have to wait a little longer for the official stats.

Okay,

So I got the obligatory smack down from Squirre1 today, because I have been non-existent from the news posting page for a few weeks *Cough-Cough*. I am sorry I have been slackin, but I have become the new Coordinator and CEO of the Iowa City Chapter of "Neverwinter Nights Anonymous", or the NNA as it is commonly known.

Since I got this game a couple of weeks ago, it has been all I can think about. It has pulled me back to the days when I would call in sick to work to play the first Diablo. Although, I haven't called in sick to work for this game (YET), I have found myself taking long lunch breaks, and leaving right at the 5 o'clock bell just to get some extra chair time in front of the computer.

To help make up for my recent lack of news-mongering, I have posted in the forums under "RPG - Misc. - Neverwinter Nights Help", that I would be willing to help anyone who is having problems in certain areas. I did pony up for the Official Strategy Guide, so I have a complete walkthrough, plus I have been keeping notes in the Journal as to special places and people I have found interesting or helpful. Please feel free to post in that forum with any questions or hints you need. And, I will try my hardest to help you out.

Squirre1, I can't promise that I will get much more news out in the near future (especially since I have 2 more Chapters in this game to get through), but I will try to do as much forum-mongering as I can.

There is a new MOD in the works for SOF 2 that is based on the action movie "HEAT", which starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and Jon Voight. The content of this MOD sounds incredible. I got a chance to talk to some of the HEAT team, and they are going into great detail to match the movie. There will be customizable weapons, maps taken from the movie, immersive character sound (heart beat, breathing), hand signals, vehicles and much more. The MOD will feature:
  • Bomb, robbery and hostage modes
  • Buy System
  • Totally new HUD
  • 10 Character skins taken from the movie
  • At least 20 realistic weapons for the first beta
  • Check out some of the characters. For more info head over to their site, or join them on their IRC channel gamesnet #heatmod.

Today we celebrate our Independence Day! July 4th is a special day to Americans, because it signifies the day we broke away from England and started what we so dearly enjoy today: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Democracy is the key to the United States' success, and what makes others leave their homeland to be apart of this great nation. Today we should not forget all of those who have put their freedoms behind them to ensure we have freedom today. Enjoy the day, and be proud to be an American!

Terminator 3 is scheduled for silver screens sometime next year, and Infogrames has already secured a deal with C-2 Pictures and Intermedia to own the rights to develop and distribute video games (yes games) based on the movie. Infogrames has also secured a deal for any T4 deal that might be in the works as well. PRNewswire says, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is expected to be one of the most popular movies of all time."

"There's no bigger action hero than The Terminator and our games will live up to the legend," said Bruno Bonnell, Chairman and CEO of Infogrames. "Video games and the motionpictures, the most popular forms of entertainment
worldwide, are more closely connected than ever before and we are thrilled to be adding this enormously successful franchise to our growing Hollywood line up."

If you are curious how the T3 video game will stack up with its release date in 2003, you will get a chance to taste an example with the Infogrames release of a T1 themed title later this fall.

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The team at HEAT has released a description of their game modes for their upcoming MOD for Soldier of Fortune 2.
    1) Robbery mod- Robbers will have to break into a vault somewhere using a code that they must find in a certain area, the code will be a simple random code that they must enter into a keypad. They then must steal whatever the item may be, money, jewlery, ect, and make it back to the gettaway point. Cops have to prevent this from happening.

    2) Bombing mod- This mode of play is similar to the defuse type of gameplay. The Cops must defuse a bomb that the robbers have set, and the robbers must defend it. Expect more info on this mode soon.

    3) Getaway mod (dash for cash)- All out action with a linear map with robbers at one end and cops at the other. The robbers will be carrying money bags that they must take all the way to the other side of the map to the getaway point, and cops must prevent this. There is a certain number of money bags that must be carried to the getaway point. And if a robber is killed and his money bag is not destroyed then the remaining robbers must go back for it.

They also have a buy system implemented and working! For more information on the map descriptions, head on over to their site.

    WalMart And Lindows Vs Windows
    - Posted 1:40 PM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Recently Wal-Mart stores have started selling a line of computers that contain the OS Lindows instead of the ever popular Windows. This comes as little shock from the retail giant as they earlier released computers with no OS at all!

I am torn on what to believe about this. I credit Wal-Mart for offering the public an alternative for their computing needs, but Wal-Mart is being cheered as challenging the monopoly of Microsoft. Now the stock value of Microsoft is roughly $250 Billion, and so is the value of Wal-Mart's stock. These companies are both critisized for crushing the "little guy." It is almost hypocritical isn't it? Let me know what you think, and post a comment. The ball is now in your court Mr. Gates.

Last week I posted news about SOF 2 map development. Well the folks over at Gaming Developer's Connection have gone and done it again! This time they have developed and released a full 8 minute Divx movie (You 'll need Divx5.0.1) on starting development of your first map. The movie starts off showing you how to make a brush, hollow it out, miter the corners and add spawn/light entities. This is a great movie, and I recommend it to you inspiring map builders. They also hint about more tutorials to follow. Lets hope so!

Microsoft launched the official site today for Combat Flight Simulator 3. From their initial press release, they give the following description:
Anti-aircraft fire blankets you. Blast debris hurls toward your propeller. And you wonder why the hell you didn't join the Navy. This ain't no free-flight, cloud-gunner, glory ride. This is ground assault: the real, gritty combat that can make or break a battle, and take your life in one massive explosion. Bombs shatter enemy airfields, trains, tank columns and more-as you streak across the European countryside in WWII's greatest planes-dodging small-arms fire-gripping your joystick with sweaty palms and white-knuckles, pumped with adrenaline-living history.
Sounds pretty sweet to me. Check out the short introductory trailer here

Rogue Wave Software announced the availability of a beta version of Project Ratchet on the Company's Web site. The Ratchet technology quickly and easily generates C++ components that represent XML documents, simplifying the task of writing XML-enabled programs by automatically generating C++ code from XML schemas. This offers users the ability to easily handle XML documents that can readily be exchanged with other systems, including those based on Java or Microsoft .NET XML and Web services systems as well as any other systems that use standard XML. Hopefully this beta software will open XML development to a level of user that would, in any other circumstance, be overwhelmed by C++ and XML.

Warcraft 3 breaks 1 Million Sales Barrier

Blizzard Entertainment released the following press release this morning.
IRVINE, Calif. - JULY 22, 2002 - Blizzard Entertainment®, a studio of the Games division of Vivendi Universal Publishing, announced today that Warcraft* III: Reign of Chaos* has surpassed 1 million units sold worldwide, according to EDI sell-through, internal company estimates, and reports from key retail accounts around the world. Over 4.4 million units of the game have been shipped to retail to satisfy demand for Warcraft III, which is now the fastest-selling PC game ever, surpassing the records set in 2000 and 2001 by two other Blizzard titles, Diablo* II and the expansion set, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction*, respectively.
After playing this game during the last couple of days, I can see why it has broken the previous game sales records. The graphics and gameplay are exquisite and the plotline quickly and effortlessly sucks you into this psuedo RTS meets RPG game. If you haven't bought it yet, do. If you can't afford it, then borrow it from a friend. After the first campaign alone, you will be searching the couch cushions for enough change to buy your own.

    ATi Radeon 9000 & 9700 Win9X Compatibility
    - Posted 9:44 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Many of you have probably heard about Microsoft's recent announcement concerning WHQL certification in reguards to some of their "aging" operating systems, which so happens to include Windows 98 SE (Second Edition). This has left many to wonder wether that will mean any driver support from ATi for everyone's favorite gaming OS. The fine folks over at [H]ardOCP have done some checking with ATi and here's what they have to say (insert blatant rip here):
The only operating systems that Microsoft currently accepts as part of their WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certification process are:

    Windows 2000
    Windows ME
    Windows XP

Since the RADEON 9700 and RADEON 9000 series of cards from ATI were released after the July 1st date, there was no way to obtain certification for these drivers. Microsoft certification of drivers is the most significant 3rd party qualification of a devices stability and quality. ATI's CATALYST drivers are based on the foundation of stability and quality and as such every driver that ATI makes available must go through Microsoft certification.

Although Microsoft no longer certifies devices under those operating systems, ATI still supports them. Users of Windows 98 and Windows 98 (SE) just simply need to use the WHQL certified Windows ME driver provided both on our shipping CD's and on our website. ATI also has an NT4 driver available for the RADEON 9000 and RADEON 9000 Pro which will be made available shortly.

Furthermore users of those operating systems are still supported by ATI's customer care program and can still obtain technical support.

Hope this clarifies the situation, and alleviates concerns.
Boiled down into a simple resolution, Win98SE users mearly need to load the WinME drivers when the card/drivers are released. I'll (and many gamers I imagine) be curious to see what this card is capable of, I may finally have to give some respect to ATi.

Hacking Bill Reaches House of Representatives

Where else but America can you have ever-increasing laws against hacking and cyber-terrorism (things like the DMCA, etc), yet something like this comes along and makes you just sit and wonder. I'm sure plenty of you have heard the push from the MPIA (Motion Picture Industry Association) and RIAA (Recording Industry Association of Ameria) have been pushing for a bill that would let them legally disrupt users of any peer-to-peer (insert favorite file-sharing applicaiton here) whom they think may be using the service for the transfer of illegal content (mp3, movies, etc.).
The bill, sponsored by Reps. Howard Berman, D-Calif., and Howard Coble, R-N.C., would immunize groups such as the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America from all state and federal laws if they disable, block or otherwise impair a "publicly accessible peer-to-peer file-trading network."
Basically, they'll be able to use such tactics as a DoS (Denial of Service) attack if they have even the slightest reason to think you may be doing something illegal.

AC2 Dev Team - Using Turbine’s G2 Engine, the environment has been made truly impressive. Trees and grass sway in the wind, weather patterns sweep across the world, and the dynamic music system lends depth and feeling to places you enter and even creatures you face.

The area of the AC2 world will be initially smaller than that of AC1; we felt that instead of spreading things out to create a world that was large simply for largeness’ sake, we wanted to focus on developing truly worthwhile, compelling content. Believe us, that's a great deal to see and many an uncharted path to take, but we wanted to remove the feeling of needlessly running hours across a vacant landscape simply to get to the next point in the game.
One feature that I absolutely loved when I first tried my hand at AC was the fact that there was no "zoning" like one may be used to in other games like EverQuest, you could run (if you so felt the need) from one end of the continent to the other. Should be interesting to see how much they'll improve this from the first one.

    RivaTuner v2.0RC11.1 Released

For those who've been trying out the leaked 30.30 version of Nvidia's new set of Detonator drivers, be sure to pick up a copy of the newest version of RivaTuner. The new version not only fixes some minor bugs, it also includes full support for Detonator 30.30 drivers. What exactly is RivaTuner?
RivaTuner is the most powerful tweaking utility for NVIDIA display adapters running under Windows 98 / Windows 98 SE / Windows ME / Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The purpose of this utility is to give you access to the many undocumented features of the Detonator drivers. RivaTuner will help you to change all undocumented registry entries. It supports all versions of Detonators drivers starting from Detonator 2.08 under Windows 98 / Windows 98 SE / Windows ME (Detonator 5.08 or higher under Windows 2000 / Windows XP).
Users constantly wanting to tweak out their video to make sure their getting the most FPS they can will probably find this most useful, but even the average non-overclocker may find some userful settings that may speed things up or even resolve some of their issues.

Eidos Converting Games To DVD Only
    - Posted 10:32 PM By Kagato

The folks behind the ever-popular Tomb Raider series of games, Eidos Interactive, apparently are looking at moving all their games to DVD only starting in 2003 according to GameSpy Daily. Kind of sketchy, but they only mention Eidos Interactive Germany, but I can't imagine that only one portion of the company would move towards this format.
The pivotal spring of the company's decision is the increasing failure of the CD-format's copy protection. Especially in Germany a lot of illegal copying takes places -- the country bears the lamentable title of Weltmeister (World leader). Eidos Germany's decision is especially prudent considering its line-up for 2003 -- games like Commandos 3 and Deus Ex 2 are bound to be titles in demand.
It's an interesting move, and one that might be a little premature. Still, moving titles to DVD will likely take a big bite out of the ISO warez scene, especially for single player games that don't require online authentication.
Could be interesting to see, I know alot of people have DVD drives in their systems, but there are people like me that would have to go out and buy one just to be able to load a game. I've wondered how long it'd be before this started happening, in alot of ways it makes sense. Why ship a game on 3+ CDs when you can put it on a single DVD, I'm just not sure if pushing it in this manner rather than offering a choice will play out with all gamers.

I think this should become a national holiday, after all, us geeks don't get a single day that honors us. Just in case you hadn't heard, today is the unofficial System Administrator Appreciation Day. If you happen to be a Sys Admin (like our very own Squirre1), take an hour off early and get a start on the weekend with a nice, cold, frosty beer (uh, if you're 21 that is!). If you're not a Sys Admin, but do have one in the office, give 'em a hug or a kiss, or at least a hand-shake for men (haha).

Gardian Unlimited got news that Acclaim is attempting to buy ad space on the gravestones of some recently departed in an attempt to promote their new game ShadowMan 2. This could be an all time low for getting the attention of the buyers. You can get the full details here.

Now we do question the validity of this, but heck it does make for good conversation... :)

Turn Your Old Console Into A Windows PC

Still have an old NES, Atarti 2600, or Amiga 1000 sitting in your closest gathering dust because it no longer works but you dare not throw out such great pieces of history? What else is one to do with these old, non-functioning classics? Turn 'em into a Retrosystem. Everyone knows case-moddin' is a big thing today, with new ideas and features appearing at every new LAN event around. "What exactly is a Retrosystem?" you may, well, here's what they've got to say about it:
We take original console or computer cases, clean them up, restore them, and build you a complete Windows/Linux compatible system to the limits of technology and to the limits of what we can stuff into these cases.

Currently we're working with Amiga 1000 cases, Atari 2600 cases and the original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) console game case.

We're using some of the smallest commercially available Windows/Linux compatible motherboards and parts as needed. In all of our systems you're getting a machine that's decades beyond it's original design. You might be getting a supercharged Amiga 1000 that runs all Amiga applications as well as Linux or Windows applications.
Those who have the tools and skills would probably prefer to tackle this on their own rather then shelling out the average $1,000 price tag, others may prefer the purchase route and save the headache and hasle of tracking down parts and pieces that will fit into such a confined space.

No date as of yet, but Robert Duffy, Software programmer at that little company called id (you know Quake 3 and all, haha), has updated his .plan with word that there is a new Quake III Arena point release planned for the not-to-distant future. Word:
Just a quick note on future releases for Quake 3 Arena. We will be releasing a new point release in the relatively near future which includes a handful of fixes and updates and also includes full Punk Buster integration to combat cheating. No firm date on when this will be out but it should not be too far off.
Mmmmmm, cheat fixes = skill on skill alone, no lame hacks.

    Gaming Gone Wrong

You may remember a headline awhile back about one individual stabbing another in a gaming center because he had been virtually stabbed by the previous player in a game of CounterStrike. Well, looks like another similar incident has sprung up reguarding "game rage". Snip:
Filipino police say a 17-year-old girl was shot dead by her schoolmate after she kept beating him at a video game. Veronica Galang was shot in the eye in front of a computer shop in Quezon City where the pair had been playing. Police are still hunting the boy, who they allege was armed with a home-made shotgun and fled after the incident. Philippine Star reports officers have discovered she had beaten him several times at the game and teased him about the standard of his play. He allegedly flew into a rage and pulled out the gun.
Well, that's definately going to extremes of being a sore looser. Remember, it's ONLY a game.

AMD To Introduce 333Mhz Front Side Bus

Anyone who owns an AMD based system, or even given it some thought, has probably heard of AMD's constant denials that they would be introducing any Athlon XP processor based on the 333Mhz FSB. Well, the good news according this report at AMD MB, it appears as if they will, in fact, be doing so. While AMD has announced the introduction of the AMD XP2400+ and XP2600+ processers later this year, there is no set date on the 333Mhz FSB versions as of yet. Apparently Intel's sudden push to hit the 3Ghz mark by years end and pushing most of their Pentium 4s to 533Mhz FSB has been enough reason for AMD to move forward. There's also news that AMD has been able to resolve some longstanding issues they've had with the Thoroughbred core and updated to a new "rev2" which appears to be working better than expected. And so the Intel vs AMD struggle continues, which in the end, can only prove beneficial to the PC owner, especially us gamers.

Warp2Search is currently hosting a new set of Detonator drivers (link is for Win2k/XP) for all Nvidia branded graphics card owners running all flavors of Windows (9X, ME, 2k, and XP). There's no information reguarding performance gains/losses as of yet, and remember, being that this is a Beta release, it's a use at your own risk kinda thing. The driver files for the v30.82 release are dated 07/16/2002 and is a generic release, hence all Nvidia adapters should be supported.
