Anyone who likes playing SWG would like this. The Wachowski Brothers are taking the Matrix one step further. They have teamed up with Monolith, EON Productions and Ubisoft to create a game called Matrix Online, which is currently in development. So far, the professions you can pick from are soldier, hacker and spy. Soldiers can train in a large variety of martial art styles, as well as many types of weapons. Not much is known yet about the styles of the spys and hackers. I'll keep you guys posted on what develops. Check back on a regular basis and see what's up.

Sacred

Ever heard of it? I hadn't until about a week ago (thanks Burnpilot and MOMO). Turns out, this game is about the biggest RPG since Diablo! Well, pretty darned good anyway (back off you fanatics!! I have a stick!). So, here's what one reviewer has to say (WoLf at games extreme):
It’s not a genre busting game and it’s not the best thing since sliced bread, or bread that slices itself. What it is however is a damn good game with a solid slice of gameplay and a good chunk of heroic fantasy – it’s got a clichéd story and the feel of it is very generic in places, linear and contrived.

This works in Sacred’s favour as you can explore the world, build up your character the way you want to and not have to worry about which rule system the game adheres to. It’s a refreshing break from the slew of D&D derived games that are here or on the way and I for one love the game to bits.
I loved the demo, myself. I'll be buying the game, as soon as I get my nice fat paycheck this weekend. Here's where you can get the demo and gameplay footage.

Soldner: Secret Wars Multiplayer Beta Demo
- Posted 9:52 PM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The wait is over! After viewing screenshots and trailers, the Soldner multiplayer demo has been released. It features two playable maps, three gametypes (Conquest, Team Deathmatch, Hostage Rescue), and lots of weapons and vehicles. Here is a little about the game from the Official Soldner website:
In "SÖLDNER - Secret Wars" the player takes over the command of such a Special Forces team. As the Commander he leads a small high tech army consisting of soldiers, light armored vehicles, helicopters and VTOLS (Vertical Take Off and Landing Airplanes) to fulfill a wide variety of mission types.
The system requirements are hefty! Minimum specs are 1.4 GHz with 256 Mb ram and 32 Mb video, while the recommended specs are 2.0 GHz with 512 Mb ram and 64 Mb video. GeForce 4 MX seems to be incompatible for an unspecified reason. If you pass the requirements, then download the game from our file downloads area.

EA Executive John Riccitiello Resigns
- Posted 12:00 AM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Electronic Arts today announced that President and Chief Operating Officer John Riccitiello, responsible for global publishing, online and other corporate departments, has resigned his position effective immediately but will remain at EA for a transition period.
"My time at EA was the best work experience in my life," said Mr. Riccitiello. "Personally, it is time to do something different and I intend to start a private equity business. I'm leaving EA when the company is enriched with the best people, the best properties and a very bright future."
This comes almost one year after his infamous statement about making more money off of gamers like yourselves. I am glad to see this change, and hopefully EA will finally start making XBOX LIVE! titles. Their disreguard of the fans request to play EA SPORTS titles on-line with the XBOX console needs to come to an end. Lets hope this is the light at the end of the tunnel.

To help with the popularity of Americas Army and to assist all the dedicated LAN Admins out there to incorporate AA tournaments into their events, the developers of AA are adding some tournament based features into their next release. Here is a snip of info from their site.
The next version of America's Army will feature new tournament mode features, which are accessible either via the command line or a gui interface. Epic Games, in cooperation with Microsoft, has launched a website for the upcoming XBOX title "Unreal Championship 2 The Liandri Conflict." It will boast both single player and XBOX LIVE multiplayer.
Unreal Championship 2 is an intense action game in which gamers take on the role of a character with superhuman agility who arms for battle against deadly characters or fights in hand-to-hand melee combat.

For those who have been waiting anxiously to play the hit game, True Crime: Streets of L.A., on PC, you'll have to wait some more. The release date looks to have been pushed back to May 11. Naturally, none of the big retailers have anything about this version on their websites, but I'll try to check back on this. You might be able to catch a commercial on television that shows some pretty outstanding gameplay footage. Otherwise, feel free to check out IGN's preview, complete with their usual media page chock full of screenshots and video footage. Also, here's a copy of the original press release from January.

Well just when you thought the Tribes was gone, Vivendi Universal has decided to put life back into it again in preperation for the upcoming release of Tribes: Vengeance.

Company Celebrates Upcoming Release of Tribes: Vengeance by Offering Free Games on Computer Gaming World Magazine’s Special Edition DVD-ROM and FilePlanet.com. Download
They better be mindful of this release. After the cluster $#*! with the Tribes 2 release, which in my opinion could have been called a paid beta so they could get development dollars, the new Vengeance release could decide the future of the Tribes series. Nielsen to Start Tracking Video Gaming
- Posted 12:01 AM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Activision announced it will team with Nielsen Entertainment to develop a new initiative that, for the first time, will allow video game companies to supply advertisers with audience measurement metrics to help them assess the impact of in-game ad exposure. The new initiative will provide tools for advertisers to effectively measure everything from ad exposure to demographics to audience recall when it comes to video game use.

Activision and Nielsen also released today the results of a major research survey titled, "Video Game Habits: A Comprehensive Examination of Gamer Demographics and Behavior in U.S. Television Households." The study, which surveyed nearly one thousand young men and boys between the ages of 8 and 34 from a nationally-representative sample of Nielsen TV households about their video game playing and television viewing habits, is the most comprehensive of its kind to date.

As an "in the know employee", I have good news for those people who have been patiently waiting for Sacred to hit retail stores. If you live in an area with a GameStop, then this obviously does not apply to you; however, everyone else can jump for joy. You're still not going to find it on the websites, but I know Best Buy is going to be receiving it in the next three to four days. I just received my copy, and it's very, very, impressive, so far. Be sure and update to version 1.6 (yes, 1.6 was released TODAY) right away, though, as you will have some lovely bugs, otherwise. This will also allow you to play multiplayer online. You can visit the main website, or just click here to go directly to the patches.

Once again, something you won't find on the websites, but True Crime for the PC looks to be hitting as (re)scheduled about May 11. Actual delivery date in a certain retailer's system is May 13. If you missed my original post, you can review it here. Additionally, this version of the game will include exclusive character skins. According to GameSpot, "These skins will consist of several all-star cast members from Activision's lineup, including characters from titles like Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Tenchu, Call of Duty, and the Tony Hawk franchise". So, not only will it be on a better system, but we'll have stuff the consoles don't get! Granted, it's not a lot of stuff, but it's something!

I have decided to take a step down from my PC pedestal for a moment and do a little catering to you people that play XBOX Live :D. According to a post on the official XBOX forums, XBOX Live will go down at 6:01am (PT) on Wednesday, April 21st, 2004, and remain down for approximately twenty-four hours. The reason for the downtime is the Tsunami update. However, it appears that the MSN messenger integration for the Tsunami update won't be included this time. Well. I'm really not sure what to think of this game. It's a new RPG by Oniric Games. I haven't downloaded the demo just yet. I've been looking at their website. It certainly seems interesting, but it doesn't have that highly polished look to it. Plus the fact that it's built on DirectX 8.1 technology. Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily; but obviously not the most up to date. At any rate, feel free to post your comments about this game here or in the forums, just as soon as you download and try the demo.

This time it's from Dreamcatcher. Their E3 lineup will consist of Dungeon Lords, SuperPower 2, Besieger, and Cold War. You can see more of some of these games on their action website. With the recent successful release of Painkiller, Dreamcatcher has plenty of people excited to see what's coming up next. If you haven't seen much on Painkiller yet, you can download the demo and try it out. It's a fun little game, for sure.

Tired Of Fast-Paced Action Gaming?
- Posted 3:24 AM By Anthos
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Probably most of you aren't, but for those that prefer the slower pace and are likely fans of such games as Splinter Cell and Hitman, this news is definitely for you. PC IGN has a brand-spanking new review of Hitman: Contracts. Here's a brief snip:
Hitman: Contracts, the third game in Eidos' series, is by no means a revolutionary step in the stealth genre, in fact, it's only a little more than a basic upgrade from Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. But the pure exploration of stealth gameplay is relatively unmatched in any game on any system. IO has once again created a strategic game of ploys, guises and choices, tailor made with a genuinely brilliant sense of pacing, intelligently designed levels, each layered with dozens of ways to beat them, and enormous sense of style and delivery.
While I never could get into the actual game itself (it just didn't do it for me), the graphics and gameplay are very impressive. If you haven't played either of the first two games, I'd recommend checking them out. If you can't find them in stores, here's an alternative. Also, be sure and check out the trailers via the flash utility on the official website.

Battlefield 2 Coming Soon
- Posted 12:00 AM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Although it hasn't been anounced stateside (or at least in english) Battlefield 2 is in the works for the PC platform, and should be on shelves spring of 2005. The press release is in swedish, but GameSpot was able to translate some of the statements. Here's some of it:
"Battlefield 2 builds on a new technical platform which will take us into the next generation of PC games," said DICE CEO Patrick Söderlund. Söderlund also said players of the game would notice a "marked improvement" in graphics and gameplay.

Battlefield 2 will be a different product from Battlefield: Modern Combat, the PlayStation 2 title announced last week. However, both games will feature the same three superpowers--China, the United States, and the newly formed Middle Eastern Coalition. Each power will have its own set of modern weapons and vehicles. The American arsenal will include the M4 assault rifle with the M203 grenade launcher, the Abrams tank, the Apache helicopter, and the Humvee.

This is very exciting news, and hopefully I will have a computer strong enough to run it by next spring! One last thought. I hope that the grenade launcher on the M4 doesn't turn out to be an overpowered weapon. You SoF:DH players know what I am talking about.

For those of you wondering about the free Tribes games, here's the scoop, from FilePlanet:
Vivendi Universal Games and FilePlanet will be distributing the full version of Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2 for free on a special-edition DVD-ROM bundled with the newsstand edition of the June issue of Computer Gaming World magazine and online via FilePlanet.com. The special versions of these games will be available starting May 4, 2004, and will be simultaneously accessible for online download through FilePlanet.com.
So, there you are. You still have a few weeks to wait, but at least you can get it through the magazine, instead of waiting behind the long lines at FilePlanet. Unless, of course, you decide to subscribe to FilePlanet and reap the benefits of never having to wait in line.

LUCASARTS ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF STAR WARS GALAXIES(r): JUMP TO LIGHTSPEED

Marin County, Calif. - April 21, 2004 - The struggle between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance extends into space with Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed, the first expansion for the award-winning Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing game set in the Star Wars(r) universe. Releasing in fall 2004 for the PC, this highly anticipated addition will dramatically expand the Star Wars Galaxies franchise by providing players more than 15 different vehicles for space exploration and combat.

Starfighters and other starships will be featured in the expansion that can be used for both space exploration and combat, allowing players to join up with allies and fly familiar X-wings and TIE fighters into battle against faction-aligned opponents and AI-controlled ships. Transport ships similar to the well-known Millennium Falcon will also be added into the game, allowing players to venture through space with friends aboard.

Set in the Star Wars timeframe between Episode IV and Episode V, this first extension to the Star Wars Galaxies foundation opens 10 vast and distinct space sectors, spanning from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim, for players to explore while engaging their opponents in intense real-time combat or uniting with friends in battle or exploration. Players can embark on more than 100 new missions, venturing through asteroid fields, nebulae and space junkyards while honing skills in four new space-specific professions. The game also features two new and completely customizable species.

Since its launch in June 2003, Star Wars Galaxies has allowed players to live the Star Wars saga and become immersed in the classic Star Wars universe simultaneously. Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed continues the full immersion in the greatest Star Wars saga ever told: Yours.
Let's hope they're on time with this one and they get a smooth launch. Look for it this fall.

Update For Matrix Online

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Ok Guys, here's an update on Mx0. First off, according to the latest press release, AOL Instant Messenger will be integrated into the program. This will enable players to communicate with their fellow gamers at any time. Players who are jacked into The Matrix Online will be able to send instant messages to their friends in real time, regardless of whether or not they are playing. This will enable players in the game to chat real-time with their offline friends and ask them for gameplay tips and tricks or alert them to jack in and join a mission.

Here's some information on the skill trees for all the professions. Some of the spy abilities include disguise, twistflip escape, and freedom to joints. Programs are a big part of the Hacker abilities. Here are some samples of Viruses: buffer overflow, logic bomb, vision disruption; and Upgrades: anti-viral sweep, overclock, and signal bounce. The Solider abilities include three types of martial arts (Aikido, karate, kung fu) and three types of firearms (handgun, rifle, submachine gun). That's it for now, but keep checking back.

Hell Forces

Here's a game being developed by a relatively new developer, which looks to be a Russian company, Orion. Established in May 2003, Orion is currently developing the game Hell Forces, which will be published by BUKA Entertainment. It's Orion's first crack at developing a game, so we'll see how it goes. They're not looking to be terribly original, as their story will be based on "old verified gameplay with hundreds of dead monsters, barrels of blood and sarcastic humor". There will also be twenty-four types of powerful weapons, starting from a rotten pipe all the way up to a hi-tech laser sniper rifle, as well as, multiple special gadgets. In addition to the weapons and "special gadgets", look for "three different worlds to clean from servants of Baphometh". Which, I'm assuming, means that the servants of Baphometh are the bad guys that you will be gunning down on three different major levels. It certainly does look like a good game engine, though. For screenshots of this upcoming FPS, click here.

Copying Games Legal?
- Posted 5:34 PM By WaRMaN
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    1 Comment | Add
We have all, at one time or another, come in contact with a copied game. Well, copied games are illegal unless Trymedia Systems steps in with their "Secure Distribution Technology." This would allow owners of a game to make a copy and share with friends. Of course when the game is installed on a different system, then it will revert to a demo or limited feature game. Then the new user has the ability to register the game via phone or internet allowing them to have the full version. This helps the game industry by partaking in the best advertising in the world: "word of mouth".

A recent Trymedia Systems poll of 2,122 adults provided the following info:

  • 15% of consumers admit to copying retail games in the past 6 months.
  • 66% asserted their right to make backup copies of games.
  • 64% said that illegal copying hurt game developers.
  • Each admitted copier buys an average of 7 games per year and makes 17 copies.
  • 35 copies are made per 100 units sold on average.
  • The top three reasons why people make copies:
    #1 Personal backup
    #2 To share with friends
#3 To use them on multiple computers (such as desktop and laptop)
  • The top reasons consumers share games are:
#1 To play multiplayer games with their friends
#2 Their friends asked them to
#3 They thought their friends would like the game
Consumers felt that their friends were honest people and that sharing could result in their friend buying his own copy about 50% of the time.
  • Not only will users distribute the game they want to play with their friends and encourage them to register it, but it is also done at no expense to the industry since you are obviously supplying the CD and shipping. This also saves the industry by not printing boxes, inlays, instructions, and not providing jewel cases.

The last five in order are Rainbow Six 3(PS2), James Bond 007: Everything Or Nothing(PS2), Mafia(PS2), True Crime: Streets of LA(PS2) and NFL Street(PS2).

The high earner for the week was NBA Ballers, bringing in $302,095 from PS2 customers and $174,338 from XBOX customers for a total close to a half-million dollars! NBA Ballers is definately where it belongs, but there were a few games that I felt should of made the list that didn't: Tenchu(XBOX) and Fight Night 2004(PS2). FN2004 was definately overlooked as the same old Knockout Kings, but the gameplay is at a all time high for the franchise. Definately recommend you check it out.

  • 6 races - Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Dark Elves, Orcs and Trolls - that can be used simultaneously (!) to build settlements and fight battles
  • More than 30 different enemy races, from cowardly goblins to powerful demons and dragons
  • A multitude of spells, divided into different categories of magic (white, black, elemental, etc.)
  • Persistant game world with continuous, gripping storyline and myriad sub-quests
