So what are you waiting for get over there, I know Mojo has already been so it doesn't really apply to you Mojo, but the rest of you go and check it out now. Me I'm going to go back to my Counter Strike addiction, I really need counseling maybe CS Anonymous or something.

CitizenC and StoneWolf over at 3D Action Panet have written a two-part series on identifying a 'serious' gamer. Part 1 and Part 2 will have you laughing at the realization that YOU fall into most of these catagories! (Reason 10) I bought another computer so I could "spend more time" with the wife. After reading that, check out what the readers posted. Send me your inputs, and I'll post them.

2nd Q3:TA MapPack Released
- Posted 1:03 PM By Squirre1
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
I saw on Q3Centerthat the second Official Map Pack for Quake3:Team Arena has been released. Here is a little click of what Paul Jaquays had to say in his .plan file:
"Three months to the day after releasing Team Arena Map Pack 1, we're proud to announce the release of a second map pack for the Quake III Arena game expansion, Quake III: Team Arena. As before, this id-approved map pack contains the work of four mappers from the on-line gaming community. This time, three are conversions of previously released Quake III Arena Capture the Flag maps (Dynatron by Ned Man, Courtyard Conundrum by Casey of Threewave, and Smear Campaign by riscchip). The fourth map (PYRmageddon by Yuri Davidoff )is an original map, created specifically for Quake III: Team Arena. These maps have been updated to work with the four Team Arena game types: Capture the Flag, One Flag CTF, Overload, and Harvester."
I have not played the maps myself as of yet, but I would say they are at least worth checkin out. You can download the MapPack from here.

ASUS Got "Punked"

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Punkbuster is leading the charge on stopping the ASUS video driver cheat from expanding. They will be releasing 2 new violation codes that will identify the use of the distributed ASUS cheat driver involved, and also catch OpenGL Passthrough (multiple 'different' device drivers loaded into memory.) This, in my opinion, should never of come to this point. A widely-known company such as ASUS should never have released such a product! Bad ASUS! If you own this product, and don't intend to use the cheat drivers, goto Punkbusters and read about what drivers to use to stay compliant.

Top Secret Info Below

Finally some news I can post about Redstorm's new tactical FPS from the Tom Clancy Universe, called "Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon". Incase you hadn't heard me rant about it in IRC a couple times, sites would post news about the game then immediately be asked by Redstorm to take it down. Info was more elusive than the Ghost Recon Force the game takes it's name from. Now that E3 has arrived though, Restorm has put out a press release that you can read here. I found this press release on Game Spy Daily's coverage of E3 along with lots of other interesting information. To find out more about the game or what's happening at E3 just follow the links and enjoy. I'll try to post more of what I consider the best news so you don't have to read about the new Barbie Games, although I wouldn't want to deprive like Squirre1 of the info on the games he loves. Now if only I can get the Black Ops teams to stop following me.....

You Will Buy The New Jedi Game...

....and these aren't the droids you're looking for. I must admit that I was overtaken with chills of anticipation when I checked my link to Game Spy Daily's E3 Coverage on the previous story and it showed this. Seems Lucas Arts has finally answered my wish for a new Jedi Knight game. I had about lost hope in Lucas Arts when I heard they were canceling Obi-Wan for the PC, but this makes me feel all tingly. The full name for the game will be "Star Wars: Jedi Outcast: Jedi Knight II", kinda long but who cares, and you can check out the games site by clicking here. You can also view the official press release here. And I still recommend you check out the E3 Coverage as it is being updated all the time. Ahhhhhhhh.... just finished reading article and it won't be out till Spring 2002, they are definitly Dark Jedi at Lucas Arts.

    Q3 Patch Update

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Robert Duffy of id Software updated his .plan with a status report on the upcoming point release patch for Quake III Arena. This patch was anticipated for last week but has yet to be released. Here is what he has to say:
"Early next week". Did I say that ? The point release is coming, we continue to update and tweak things as well as fix some issues. Mod Authors have and have had the source etc and it is in the testing loop at Activision. Soon is the best I can say, but we hope this will address all of the cheats, hacks, adds a multitude of new things request wise, fixes lots of bugs etc. A Linux beta will be available right around the same time too as well as Mac.
I am not sure if this is good news or bad news for some who want to hang onto the 1.17 PointRelease. We will post the new patch as soon as it becomes available.

JCal over at Voodoo Extreme has written up a preview of Electronic Arts upcoming game titled Majestic. This game definately sounds to be quite a unique playing experience, here's a snippet:
You might have heard that Majestic uses your phone, Instant Messenger, fax, email client and web browser to have you participate in the game. However, its one thing to read about such plans and quite another to see them in action. At last week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, EA reps gave a demo of Majestic behind closed doors that gave me the chance to see for the first time how this game will actually work. The demo showed off using Real Player that shows a character speaking to you as the player. The character tells you to check out a web site on the net for more info on the conspiracy. You do so and you come to the official Majestic web site.
Read the whole review below, or view it at Voodoo Extreme which also has some screenshots from the game.

    B&W Patch Delayed
    - Posted 6:23 PM By Squirre1
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
I regret to say that on the B&W Website they state that they have to delay the patch for another 10 days. Here is the reason:
Lionhead regrets that the patch which was expected to be released on the 21st May has been delayed for a further 10 days. This is because of one of the fixes which allowed online play to work over cable modems in the Netherlands was by chance at the last minute found not to work on certain other ISPs.

Lionhead regrets that it has not been able to make frequent annoucements about the patch until now but aims to keep the members of the Black & White Community better informed from this day onwards.

    Sorry everyone!!
They need to come out with an awesome strategy guide. Damn cow keeps eating my people.

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The fine folks over at Game-Revolution have posted a nice little review of the upcoming Bioware game entitled NeverWinter Nights. If you have ever or are currently into playing D&D (Dungeons & Dragons for you old timers), you owe it to yourself to get this game when it comes out. Here's a snippet from the review:
You've got a Dungeon Master, you've got 3rd edition D&D rules, you've got a party made up of a few friends, you've got user-created modules and weapons and you've got an incredible map editor. Now just get some Tab and some Fritos and WHAMMO! - 1983 all over again. Except this time, you're not forced to imagine everything. The graphical engine powering NWN (dubbed 'Aurora') is simply amazing. Dynamic lighting leads to torches that cast lifelike shadows. Characters are detailed - when they switch weapons and armor you actually see it on the model. From the plethora of monsters to the gorgeous particle effects, NWN brings D&D to life in untold ways.

For those of you having WON.net problems withing Half-Life / Counterstrike, you're not alone as it appears to be happenging to Tribes 2 players as well. Dynamix's Dave Georgeson sent a note to TribalWar explaining the current situation. Here's the snip:
There is a problem with the Sierra/WON/Flipside DNS. It's preventing authentication from happening.
We're trying to figure it out now.
The problems we were experiencing last night were the precursor to the total collapse of the DNS we're working through now. This has nothing to do with the Tribes 2 code.
It is a hardware issue and we're working on it.

Halo : No Internet Play for XBox?

For those early adopters drooling over the idea of Halo running on the XBox, according to this post at Halo.Bungie.org something bad has hit the fan. Here's the lowdown from Bungie's PR man Matt:
Unfortunately it's not possible for us to code support for internet play without more info than we have now. So Xbox Halo won't magically work over the internet when MS gets their networking stuff up. I don't think a patch will happen either.

A separate product is a possibility, but as things stand right now there is no definite plan for such a product. The team gets to decide what they work on next, but they won't make that decision until Halo is done.

I should make clear that I'm talking specifically about the Xbox version of Halo here.

    -Matt
Well, looks like us PC owners have something to gloat about. Wow, Microsoft bought Bungie and yet can't keep them up-to-date on their own product, yeeesh!

Now granted, all in all, you'd still have to run the offending ASX, but that shouldn't be hard considering the quick spread of such things like NakedWife

    Half-Life DC Cancelled?

EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
According to the gents over at Voodoo Extreme there are rumors floating around that the Sega Dreamcast port of Half-Life is not happening. Here's the blurb:
Voodoo Extreme has received numerous reports from readers which seem to indicate that the Sega Dreamcast port of Valve Software's Half-Life has been cancelled. The game has been removed from the "Coming Soon" section of many e-tailers, and some readers have been emailed by those retailers telling them that their pre-order for the game has been removed because the game was cancelled. Voodoo Extreme contacted a PR rep from Sierra Studios a couple of days ago to ask about these reports and was told, "There's nothing new to report about HLDC". However, the reports have continued to come in so we have attempted to contact Sierra again on this matter. We will keep you informed if Sierra makes another statement about this situation.
At this point it may only be a rumor, but with Sega exiting the console business, how can anybody be expected to continue making software?

There's a new version of the Infiltration teamplay mod for Unreal Tournament available for download from their Official Web Site. The new version is 2.85.5 and here is a list of changes made in this new version:
  • Two additional weapons have been included, the P90 submachine gun, and the Five seveN pistol.
  • Distance sounds included for all weapons, adding an amazing amount of depth and atmosphere.
  • From the prone position, you can now lower the weapon from the aim perspective.
  • Smooth transition effect moving your weapon from aim and hip.
  • The Last Player Timer will now award the round to the team with the most players or lives or score, based on the situation.
  • Players becoming invisible on a server when standing behind some objects is fixed.
  • Weapons now disappear between rounds.
  • You can now associate camo uniforms to individual maps. We've included presets for all current Infiltration maps, but you can change these to your own style.
  • Loadout items tweaked for gameplay. Internal checks made to prevent the usage of manually edited loadout INI files.
Stamina abilities fine-tuned more. Some bulk values adjusted for gameplay. Running is now more realistic.
  • An option is provided to let you set how long carcasses will remain in the battlefield, in seconds. This can remain infinite however.
  • An option is provided to display a message as to who killed you. But you will NOT know who you have killed.
  • Sig551 laser now working online, although the laser dot doesn't always reflect terrain properly.
  • The way teams are interfaced with the game has changed, so you will need to recreate your teams again.

  • Age of Mythology Preview

GameFirst! has posted a preview of Age of Mythology, the upcoming 3D Real Time Strategy from Ensemble Studios and Microsoft. The preview is based from investigating the game during last week's E3. Here's a snippet:
Gameplay will also change. Ensemble realizes that too often the AoE games consisted of a mad dash to the final age, where the best units were located. In AoM, the shortest route to the final age will not necessarily be the best. If you don't build up your temples and infrastructure in the earlier ages, you'll find yourself seriously handicapped in certain areas, and players who putter around for a while in the second age will find they've accrued certain bonuses. Games will also be shorter, lasting about an hour, and no longer will you have to run down the enemy's lone surviving unit to win.
Age of Empire fans rejoice, this looks to be quite the experience when complete.

    Counter-Strike vs CGW

It's not exactly news, but I figured you CS players might get a kick out of this, and even those of you who don't play may get a laugh. Jeff Green of Computer Gaming World has posted an article titled /Me--> OwnZ joo!, which gives his impression of what Counter-Strike players in general are like. Here's a snippet:
Honestly, though COUNTER-STRIKE is a team-based game, I don't think I've ever seen less teamwork involved in any multiplayer game. Maybe it was just the servers I tried, but for a game with such a hardcore, "macho" vibe to it, I've never come across a bigger concentration of whiners and babies in all my years of game playing.

    "You stole my kill."
    "Hey sh-head, no bunny hopping."
"There's no way you're not dead, cheater."
    "Way to camp, a-hole."
    And so on.

I'm not saying that all COUNTER-STRIKE players I like this. I'm not saying the game's no good. When I got onto good servers, with actual grown-up people, I had a blast. I was dead most of the time, sure, but I still had fun. Watching in spectator mode, after dying, was often more fun, for this reflex-challenged editor, than the game itself. What I am saying is, if you're a newbie wondering what all the fuss is with COUNTER-STRIKE-beware. Not every bandwagon is meant for every gamer to jump on. And if you find yourself wounded and ravaged and exhausted from constant defeat in COUNTER-STRIKE, or if you just can't take the grade-school level verbal abuse, come look me up in EVERQUEST. I'll knit you a sweater.
If you only new how true this was for the Non-CS players.

    SoF 2 : E3 Preview

PCZone has posted a new preview of Soldier of Fortune 2 based on what they saw of Raven Software's upcoming first person shooter at the recently held E3. Here's a snip:
What Raven chose to show at E3 was more a technology demo than a working game but what they did show of the last few month's work was nothing short of stunning. Raven plans to make full use of the power of the current crop of 3D cards, pumping high-resolution textures down the graphics pipeline so fast that had it any ears there would doubtless be blasts of smoke spewing out them. These are mapped on to every surface in the game, right down to the tiniest objects giving pinpoint accurate detail. The end result is an environment as lifelike as any yet seen.
If the graphics on this game don't make you wanna run out and buy a GeForce3 card, nothing will!

    B&W Patch Delayed (Again...)

For those anxious to get their hands on the new patch for Black & White, you'll have to wait a little longer. According to Robert Hansen, there's been another slight delay on the release of the, here's the info :
Lionhead has completed programming the first Black and White patch. The patch also contains an additional feature - enhanced support for Pentium 4. It is currently still undergoing configuration testing with Electronic Arts and is awaiting QA approval before being released. We are expecting to learn the QA completion date on Monday, at which point a notice will be posted on this site.

Lionhead regrets that it is not able to release a pre-QA version of the Patch as originally planned due to customer support concerns at EA.
I suppose if anything, we should be happy that patch is being put through its paces, rather than the patch-a-day we had when Tribes2 came out.

    Shogun Expansion Preview

The fine folks over at GameSpot have posted up a new preview of Shogun: Total War - Warlord Edition (say that three times fast). The new "gold" version of Creative Assembly's and Electronic Arts' RTS game sports some new enhancements and a new mission called The Mongul Invasion. Here's a snippet:
The new, additional material in the Warlord Edition takes you back to another dramatic period in Japan's history. In 1274, the great Mongol warlord Kublai Khan dispatched his forces to Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu in the hopes of conquest. The Mongols were beaten back by the Japanese, but that didn't stop the invaders from trying again in 1281. This time, Kublai Khan's fleet was obliterated by a massive typhoon, called the "kamikaze," or divine wind. The Shogun Warlord Edition puts you in the boots of the Mongol invader and Japanese defender. Where the original game focuses on building up and cultivating the land in your efforts to control it, the new material will offer an alternative style of gameplay. Here, the Mongols will concentrate on destruction, pure and simple.
For those RTS game fans (like me), this sounds to be a nice expansion to a great game.
