Woot! The fine, hard-working folks over at Raven Software have released the Win32 dedicated server package for Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. It can currently be downloaded from either XGR or HomeLan Fed and weighs in at a mere 258 KB. Just note that as before before with the Linux version, the dedicated server is not support by LucasArts.

    Codemasters To Do Columbian Crackdown?
    - Posted 4:18 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
When I first heard about this new title from Codemasters yesterday, I imagine that I wasn't the only one thinking "April Fools". Well, apparently the joke is on everyone because it appears that Codemasters IS going to be producing a new game titled Shoot to Kill: Columbian Crackdown. Snip:
Shoot to Kill: Colombian Crackdown has a deep and gripping plot of deception, betrayal and revenge, coupled with intense and refined gameplay. With a modern-day setting, the game plunges players deep into Colombia’s drug underworld as Drug Enforcement Administration Officers. The experience charges players with uncovering and bringing to justice, individuals and gangs involved in the trade and trafficking of cocaine.
Somehow I think this may cause a ruckus from activists groups who are already saying games are too violent and wanting government intervention. IMHO I think this is a pretty pathetic way to try and gain sells in an already crowded market (FPS).

Toe Jam & Earl 3 To Go Xbox Only
    - Posted 7:53 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Fans of Sega's popular Toe Jame & Earl title of games may, or may not, be happy to know that Sega of America has officially revealed that the Toe Jam & Earl 3 is being produced. The downside? It's going to premiere exclusively (i.e. No PC/PS2 version) for the Microsoft Xbox system. Snip from Gaming Age:
Featuring off the wall, "just-for-the-funk-of-it" humor with a hip urban twist, "ToeJam & Earl III" delivers nonstop challenge and reward through mini-games, rhythmic Boss Battles, and unlockable areas and abilities. An open-ended game structure offers players a high degree of freedom with endless choices, and game levels are randomly generated so every play experience, in each of the many environments, is fresh and new. Funky music, rich character dialog and jaw-dropping graphics stimulate the senses throughout the game. Players can play alone, or use the dynamically splitting screen to play with a friend to double-team the clueless Earthlings in cooperative play.
They've also included 5 screenshots of the upcoming title. IGN Xbox is also featuring news of this recent announcement.

    Dungeon Seige Goes Gold
    - Posted 10:06 PM By Krogue
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Dungeon Siege, the action/RPG game from the creator of Total Annihilation, has already gone gold and should be hitting store shelves anytime this week.

I know I speak for all (or at least most)of the diehard Diablo fans in the group, when I say this game looks kick ass. The scheduled arrival date is this Friday, April 5th. However, since I believe Best Buy gets their shipments in on Thursday, some lucky folks might be able to get it as early as Thursday night. When you get it, let the others here know. Maybe we can get in some Dungeon crawling action this weekend. (Rikus - MoJo - Squirre1: call me so we can do some monster slaying).

If you haven't taken a look at the screenshots or the gameplay action, head over to Planet Dungeon Siege for more information. Especially check out the "Pack Mule" character. It let's you haul three times the normal amount of booty from the areas you clear out.

And for all of you MOD and Level creators out there. You won't find a cooler, more customizable game on the market. Create some cool dungeons for your friends to die in. Oh, and when you do, let us know so we can try them out too. If we get enough user created dungeons, maybe Squirre1 can free up some hard drive space here on the site, so everyone can try them out.

See you all this weekend in the Dungeons.

Christian Antkow (id software), has updated his .plan with news that he's currently testing a dedicated server patch that will allow users to run a multiplayer server without requiring a full copy of the game to be installed. Snip:
I am currently testing the new Dedicated Only Server, (Win32) that should hopefully be released in the near future, on my MP_BASE and MP_DESTRUCTION Servers.

This will be a relatively small 27mb download for people who wish to run Wolf Servers without having to copy the entire game directory onto a server machine.
Mmmm, dedicated server in a 27MB download, tre cool.

Eidos Interactive has released a new patch for Blood Omen 2. Weighing in at 2.7MB, the v1.01 update fixes the following:
  • Various crash bugs (either lockups or crashes to desktop) have been fixed. Most notably crashes when loading a savegame, but also various ingame crashes.

  • Various minor graphical problems have been fixed.
  • Refresh rate selection now works properly.
  • Volume settings are now properly saved.
  • Mouse controls have been tuned for better playability
  • Movement actions (like Forward) can now be mapped onto mouse or gamepad buttons.

    Star Trek Elite Force II

Activision has announced a sequel to Star Trek Voyager Elite Force set in the Star Trek: The Next Generation universe upon the USS Enterprise. Based on the Quake III engine, this game includes an interesting array of weapons, as well as all your old favorite enemies (and a few new ones too). Multiplayer modes include Holomatch, Team Holomatch, and CTF. The pictures look... all right. Seems to be a little lacking to me, but it's still in development (no release date set as of yet) so we'll keep an eye out for any developments.

    Age of Mythology
    - Posted 6:40 PM By devilon
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Slated for release in September, Age of Mythology (the next part of the AoE series) is nearing completion. It includes everyone's favorite Greek, Egyptian, and Nordic cultures. According to GameSpot:

"The Norse culture in Age of Mythology is very different from the Greeks or Egyptians, and the greatest departure among the three from the gameplay of Age of Empires. Of course, they have unique units, mythological creatures, god powers, and improvements. But that's to be expected. What's more surprising is that they actually gather resources and build structures a little differently. The way in which they earn favor is also a big change from the other cultures. The Norse's theme is one of expansion and aggression. And much of their gameplay style, from units to infrastructure to favor gathering, is geared toward overrunning the map with units and staking claim to territory with rapidly expanding buildings."

Sounds good to me. Look for a demo in another few months. The pictures look awesome, and for never playing any Age of Empires style games, I may have to give this one a try.

Everyone's been waiting for Duke Nukem: Forever. In the meantime, there's something coming up that should tide us over for now. In this new game from Sunstorm Interactive, Duke is going to be fighting Mech Morphix, who is destroying NYC with a substance called GLOPP. One thing, though. The game will be returning to its roots and be in the form of a side-scrolling action game. The demo (not yet released to the public) has promise, and the game looks fairly nice, but it doesn't look that promising as yet. Only time will tell.

Sierra has now released more info on the upcoming new PC Tribes product. Titled Tribes: Fast Attack (designed by the same people who are designing Tribes: Aerial Assault for the PS2 [Inevitable Entertainment]), the stand alone game will include a training session and an all new single player campaign spread out over nine levels, as well as new multiplayer levels. Gameplay will be refocused for smaller teams for multiplayer and there will be redesigned and modified vehicles, including a single player bomber and an armed assault transport. And, get this, Tribes 2 owners are eligible for a $20 rebate on the $39.99 product. However, it runs off of its own specialized game engine as a separate product. A patch for Tribes 2 players is in the works, but no release date is set right now.

Just in case you are not a forum buff and haven't checked out the MwGL forums lately (*ahem* which you should), apparantly RoadRunner is going to start charging high bandwidth consumers more per month. They will be putting a cap on how much a person can use in a month and then anything over will be charged. The actual amount of how much they will be charging is still no where to be found, however it's going to happen and maybe as soon as this summer.

Steam has made another release in their attempts to make CS 1.4 bugger free. The changelist is as follows:

» Fixed Steam UserID output: "Steam_<#>:<#>"
» Reworked "banid", "listid", "writeid", and "removeid" to work with new Steam UserID format, including accepting the new format as a parameter for "banid" and "removeid".
» Tweaked output from "status" and "stat" commands to support new Steam UserID format.
» Fixed problem with not being able to start "secure" dedicated servers from the launcher.
» Fixed problem with mouse/keyboard input.
» Fixed bug in view angle of first person spec mode.
» Smoothed weapon model bobbing in first person spec mode.
» Fixed ammo count on the client not matching the server.

They had made an earlier release with the following HUGE change :P
» Hostage auto-follow behavior rolled back to the same as 1.3

Yea they are REALLY winding down now. If you haven't picked up Steam yet, do so.

Gamespot sends word that Activision's upcoming FPS, Soldier of Fortune II Double Helix will be out with a multiplayer test sometime next week. Here's a bit:

Activision has announced that it will release a multiplayer compatibility
test for Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix, its upcoming first-person shooter,
on April 18. The downloadable test will let players compete on one map in
four different game modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch, elimination, and infiltration.
The test will also include 20 character skins and all the weapons available
in the multiplayer mode of the full game. Activision noted that the compatibility
test is not the official demo for the game and does not contain the single-player
portion of the game. Those who participate in the test are encouraged to provide
feedback on the game and its compatibility by e-mailing sof2mptest@ravensoft.com.

Wow! Here's some interesting news. Not exactly gaming related, but certainly relevant to all those that surf online and use the best search engine out there (Google). Here's a snip telling you what it's about:
This month, about 100 Comcast subscribers were temporarily shut out of Google when the search company charged the high-speed Internet access provider with hosting some accounts that had abused its terms of service by performing "automated queries." The crackdown cut a wide swath, taking out a block of IP addresses, shutting down the guilty and innocent alike.
It's a bit of a read, but well written and worth the time, I think. Check out the full story, right here. Also, if you would like to express an opinion, you can post your comments here and/or join the debate over at House of Help.

    - Changing the way that banning users by SteamID works internally (you use the same command as a server administrator) to fix a problem some admins were experiencing.
Yea, I know exciting stuff. It would seem they were done making improvements for CS 1.4, so why haven't they released it yet? We'll see.

Ok, so it's been moved back a bit, to next week. Here's a snip of the official message from Valve:
The Steam-administered beta of Half-Life 1.1.0.9 and Counter-Strike 1.4 (CS 1.4) is nearing completion, and the final versions of these updates will be released to the public next week.

CS 1.4 introduces several new features to the world's most popular online action game, including new missions (de_chateau, cs_havana), further integration of Valve's spectator technology, and more. The updates also mark the introduction of Valve's anti-cheat network, hosted in partnership with Speakeasy on the ISP's National Broadband Gaming Network (www.speakeasy.net)
Well atleast we are getting somewhere! Read more @ Planet Half-Life

As soon as I can get my hands on it I will upload it to the FTP server. YAY!

    Chris Taylor Interview

Here's a lengthy interview that just chock-full of information for all you Dungeon Siege fans. This bit talks about the new editing tools coming out:
BJ: Let's talk about expanding the entertainment of your game with editing tools.

CT: We're providing a lot of development tools [to the mod community]. The single biggest tool is our Siege Editor; it's the thing takes all our content and puts it all together. We've built the engine so that you can create new AI, create new special effects, new spells, anything that the game has in it, all the way up to, but not including the creation of new art assets, which is new monsters and characters. Discreet has created a program called Gmax, so what we've done is create something called "Siege Max." Siege Max is basically 3D Studio where you can only export in a certain game format, our Dungeon Siege format. People will be able to create new monsters, new armor, new shields, weapons, boots, helms, et cetera...terrain. And they've got the full suite. They can build anything they want.
Check out the six-page full story right here.

Are you a mod maker? You stinker, you never told me that.. At any rate the mod tools are available to download so you should get at making CS for Jedi Knight II (I kid, I kid!). Here's a tidbit from Gamespot:
Raven Software has announced the release of a downloadable mod kit for Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, LucasArts' popular Star Wars action game. The tools include a map editor, a map compiler, model viewers, and a shader editor and viewer. The 4MB mod kit lets players create and import new maps and models for the game...

For you RPG nerds, yes all of you, the long awaited game that will keep you indoors and the girls outdoors is about to release a beta for you to try! Now I know this is coming to you early and you probably just did a reverse backflip in delight, however before you sprain something check out this tidbit from Gamespot:
BioWare and Infogrames have announced the upcoming limited beta test of Neverwinter Nights, their upcoming Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. The companies are now accepting applications for the beta test, and they will select new testers every week in a rolling acceptance process. The first group of beta test discs will be sent out in early May. To sign up for the beta test, visit Betatests.net and complete the registration process.
Psst, what are you waiting for? Btw, I didn't say "reverse backflip" the first time, I had to change it to that to make it more "family oriented". I'm bad.

Soldier of Fortune 2 Multiplayer Test Released

I couldn't remember whether this had been posted yet, or not, but last week Activision released the Multiplayer Test for Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix, the sequel to Raven Software's notoriously violent PC first-person shooter.

The test only contains one map, but it can be played in all four multiplayer game modes including: deathmatch, team deathmatch, elimination, and infiltration. Dialup users will be glad to know that it is only a 51 MB download, around half the size of what is becoming today's standard for game demos, or "tests" as they are sometimes called.

The full game is due for release next month. You can download the Multiplayer Test here.

Elemental - A Total Conversion DS Mod
    - Posted 8:54 AM By Anthos
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Mods are popping up all over. This time it's a total conversion mod called "Elemental" that's being announced.
We just wanted to announce our Dungeon Siege mod is well under way and the site is up. Check us out at www.the-elemental.net.

Elemental is a total conversion of Dungeon Siege, comprised of completely unique worlds and inhabitants. Elemental features new races, five Techniques of Elemental Magic replacing the standard magic system, an innovative Covenant system enabling characters to make truly interesting character development decisions, weather/time/ seasons, gambling, an invasion system with swarming raids, and other sweet goodness.

We call Elemental’s theme Biblepunk(tm), where a real geographical and historical setting collides with the fantastical. Here you’ll play a slave seeking your freedom - and your destiny - as an Elemental.
Please contact us if you would like more info.
Sounds like a very interesting project. Head on over to their site and check it out. They are also looking for help, if you're interested.

It seems the Day of Defeat team needs to work out some kinks before they can actually release this bad boy (sort of like how the HL/CS server release SHOULD have gone). At any rate, it will be a couple more days before we can see this realistic World War II era mod released. Mugsy, of the day of defeat team, had the following to say:
Sorry to get all of your hopes up.
It will be a few more days while we work out some technical difficulties.
A man of many words folks!

As of right now we have servered up 3.7 Gigs of good old CS Goodness. This does not include any other traffic that the site has seen. Just as a note to people the try to download. If you receive a error when you click on the link, it means that the server is full. Try again in about 5-10 minutes and you should be ok. Also, the the Mirror if one is available, it is a MwGL Mirror not one of the CSNation Mirrors....

Finally, while you are here, if you have any comments or suggestions about the site, please stop by the forums and let us know.

    Thanks Again and Enjoy.

    GTA III May 21st

The good news? The awaited PC port of GTA III will be available May 21st, 2002. The bad news? As of right now there does not seem to be multiplayer support. Let's hope Rockstar realizes their success came from their amazing multiplayer gaming suppot through their previous releases GTA and GTA2. However, this PC release is still being looked forward to and hopefully a multiplayer patch is already in the works. If you've played the PS2 version of GTA3 you are well aware of the nice visulas and fun gameplay. The PC release offers the following:
    Enhanced Visuals
Skinnable characters (upload your mug and place it on your character)
Enhanced sound for that "in-depth" feel.
Check out more via the Rockstar website on their new mini PC release site.

GameSpyDaily has just gotten ahold of some new screenshots for the newest addition to the Rainbow 6 series. Feast your eyes on the beauty of the Rainbow 6: Raven Shield here. My god the game is looking gorgeous. Now, if you will please excuse me as I must wipe the drool from my keyboard. If you want more info on the game however, feel free to head to the official site that just opened today.
