So. You wanna be a smuggler.

Can you do it in Sony's upcoming Star Wars: Galaxies game? Let's take a peek at their FAQ, shall we?
4.30 Is there a smuggling profession?

Yes! This profession provides skills designed to help smugglers avoid detection of "illegal" materials by authorities. There are also skills that make players better at getting out of trouble once they are caught (something Han Solo didn't spend enough skill points on). In addition, the smuggling profession incorporates some slicing and combat skills.
Sounds like fun to me. On a related note, if you are interested in this game, you might wanna check out the April issue of Computer Gaming World. Okay, so it's a little ways off, but trust me, you'll wanna look at it. Looks like there will be some better options for battle than we are used to for a role playing game. "Okay, I slashed at you, now it's your turn."

    Win some wireless 3D glasses!

I saw some 3D glasses at a computer show one time. They seemed like they were pretty cool, if you wanted to shell out the cash for them. Now's your chance to get a pair for free! Check out the contest from SimHQ. For those of you that don't want to read all the way through their review of the glasses, here's the conclusion:
I have always felt that 3D glasses were a gimmick, a lot like Force Feedback. Neat idea, but does it really make things any better and it is worth the hassle? I think that in many applications, the answer to that question is now YES! There are a few games I would not bother using them on, but there are several that are reborn with their use. Much like the introduction of 3dfx's Voodoo 5 anti-aliasing, the eDimensional 3D glasses takes an existing technology and through a hardware enhancement, changes and greatly improves what you can expect from your visuals. At $69.95, this is a good "ask Santa" item.
Besides, what could it hurt? Free contest, right? Go get it done!

Cute little PacMan type game. Not my cup o'tea, but if it suits you, you can try it as shareware for 15 days. Cost is $18 if you want to register. Here's what one of the guys from Miraplacid had to say:
Miraplacid Enigmaze 3D is a pacman-like arcade game with sharp graphics, full control over viewpoint and funny sound effects. It's a family game - no blood, no pessimistic landscapes and monsters are pretty cute. Each of 25 levels has unique style and charm. Enigmaze 3D will teach you to be patient, fast and smart.
You can check out their website here.

    Hooters: Road Trip

Ubi Soft has announced the release of Hooters: Road Trip for the PC at the end of March. The actual plot of this game involves a series of races across the US (sounds waaaaaaaaay too much like Cruis'n USA to me) and for taking first place in the game, getting the chance to hang out with the Hooters girls. The game looks nice, but the plot leaves a little to be desired. I think a huge "splat" is in order when this game hits the shelves.

Gentleman, start your engines! Q3 Rally released yesterday to a long awaiting community. The game features multiple modes of game play:
  • Racing modes (to include team)
  • Deathmatch mode (to include teams)
  • CTF
  • Derby!
  • The game has plenty of maps and custom cars to race with, and is surprisably customizable. The only problem noted is the sound problems. Most of the sounds do not work, but it doesn't stop the gameplay. You can play it on-line too, but there are some pretty big bugs lurking out there. Although there is no patch yet, I am sure there is one on the way. I would still recomend this MOD to prepare for the final product.

    C&C Renegade v1.05 Patch
    - Posted 7:45 AM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
Yep, time for another patch already for players of Westwood's Command and Conquer Renegade. The new 5MB patch brings you up to version 1.05 and addresses the following:
  • Minor updates to firewall negotiation queuing. This was preventing players joining games in some situations (usually when many players were trying to join at once, or when many players hit the abort button on this dialog).
  • Minor updates to low-level packet handling which were causing server instability when unexpected traffic appeared on the game port.
  • LAN hosting is now allowed on routable IP addresses.
  • Cosmetic fix to game list control which was displaying multiple selected games when the list was refreshed in some cases.
  • Some day, game manufacturers will produce code that needs no patching, but until hell freezes over, continue to monitor their sites for the newest batch of fixes.

    Columbine Lawsuit Dismissed

Ok, while it doesn't deal with a particular game, it's outcome could have had lasting effects on the gaming industry. Judge Lewis Babcock, in charge of the Columbine Suit, has dismissed the suit. For those who don't know, or can't remember, the lawsuit against was brought up against several media companies by the family of the teacher slain during the shootings at Columbine High school in Littleton, CO. According to Judge Lewis Babcock "courts around the United States have rejected similar claims brought against media or entertainment defendants," and that "the two gunmen were the ones responsible for the teacher's death." While a tragic event, it sadenning to see more of "blame those with the most money" and get them to settle out of court.

Can it be? A first-person shooter that has a co-op mode?? I don't know how long I've been asking for this, but hopefully this will provide some satisfaction. Here's a snip from cscentral's preview.
You start off in CS: CZ with only a few weapons to choose from and with a team that has only a few skills, but as you accomplish more and more missions you get more money and you can buy better weapons and improve the skills of you and your team members which are controlled by the game's AI. I was actually never a fan of those games where I had to equip my own troops before a game, I wanted to go in right away and start fragging but Gearbox has made a very cool interface which makes it really easy and fast so this won't be a problem. You can also play through the single-player with your friends and as they take the position of the bot-controled team members (Co-Op mode). It is also possible to play it over the Internet so you don't need to be at a LAN.
All in all, it looks to be shaping up to be one rockin' game. If you haven't taken a look yet, go check out what Valve and Gearbox have to offer.

If you are like a lot of gamers, you probably have a lot of stuff stored on your hard drive. Games, music, movie clips, etc., take up quite a bit of room. If you are thinking of upgrading, you may be interested in the "latest and greatest" that Western Digital has to offer. The WD1200JB is the newest drive offered from the hard drive manufacturer. Spinning 120GB of storage space at 7200 RPM isn't the breaking news of the moment, but the 8MB memory cache is something to catch your eye. Not to mention the lowest price on PriceWatch being $215. If you doubt my words, you can check out the review kindly offered up over at Tom's Hardware.

    No XBox Recall In Japan
    - Posted 8:26 AM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The rumors and reports have been flying arround that Microsoft was issuing a recall of it's XBox units that recently went on sale in Japan. Microsoft has put out this press release to ensure everyone that there is no recall and to explain the situation that spawned these reports. Snip
REDMOND, Wash., March 7, 2002 -- An apparent misinterpretation of information on a Microsoft Japan Web site resulted today in a media report of a recall of Microsoft's Xbox™ game console in Japan. This report is incorrect. There is no recall of Xbox in Japan or any other market.

The Xbox Japan Web site did report that Microsoft Customer Care Japan had received a small number of inquires (significantly less than one percent of systems sold) from customers reporting small scratches to the outside edge of some game disks after use in the Xbox game consoles. While this is not a common occurrence, and minor scratching is primarily a cosmetic issue that does not affect performance, a positive customer experience is of the utmost importance to Microsoft. Xbox Japan responded accordingly in its statement offering to evaluate any Xbox system that a customer is concerned about. If a system needs to be repaired or replaced for any reason, Microsoft will do this immediately.

After successful launches in North America and Japan, demand for Xbox continues to be high in all launched markets, and production continues at a rapid pace. Microsoft will launch Xbox in Europe and Australia on March 14, 2002.
Amazing how PR skates around these kinda topics, no word on how many people have reported this issue.

If you haven't already heard or read about this, read it now. Alienware custom-built computers are now available at your local Best Buy retailer. (No, they will not sell just the case to you. I already asked.) Now, if you are wondering what the advantage to this is, I'll tell you. Best Buy offers you their service plan that will last you a couple years longer than Alienware's warranty. In addition, for those of you who have no need of service :), you can get no interest financing (with payments) for twelve months. How sweet is that? Plus, you can go in there and drool all over that kick butt case they've got on display.

For those who don't own a subscription to PC Gamer or just haven't gotten their April 2002 issue, they have a small blurb (page 27) on Grand Theft Auto 3 for the PC. Granted there's not alot new about it more than what is already known, but it at least confirms that the title will be released. Snip:
"Rockstar quietly let the world slip a few weeks ago that GTA III was coming to the PC. A key feature will be support for 16-person multiplay, and the PC version will also sport better textures at a much nicer resolution. The mouse/keyboard setup will be instantly familiar to third-person-action fans, too. We're definitely looking forward to this one."
Mmmmm, 16-person multiplayer, how sweet is that going to be!?

New Fan Technology From Y.S. Tech
    - Posted 8:05 AM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
The folks at Y.S. Tech (yes the fan manufacturer) have posted up little blurb about a new fan technology they are looking at introducing. The "motor" is in the outside casing of the fan and the tips of the fan blades are used to propel the fan with magnetic energy. How is this better than normal fans?:
It reduces 75% of traditional motor hub area. This revolutionary breakthrough not only increases 30% of airflow and static pressure, but also brings air stream directly to the centralized heat source. As a result, T.M.D. FAN improves the efficiency of heat dissipation at least 15%.
Case modders will probably find new and exciting ways to show off the new design as well. No news on when they may start releasing fans based on this, but with something that's so much more effecient, I can't image it will be too long.

    Upcoming Changes to EverQuest
    - Posted 4:04 PM By Kagato
EMail News to a Friend  Printer Friendly Version    0 Comments | Add
I'm not sure on how to react to the news that Verant is introducing some rather massive changes to their popular MMORPG EverQuest. While some of the changes are nice, others seem to go in the exact opposite direction that Verant has pushed for years (no pain, no gain). Some of the new changes include:
  • The need to sit down and stare at the spellbook to regain mana has been removed at all levels. (Sitting down and having Meditation skill are still required.)
  • After applying advanced mathemagics, the commonly known "hell-level" experience gain effect in levels 30, 35, 40, and 45 has been largely done away with. Further, the "post-hell-level" experience loss in levels 31, 36, 41, and 46 was driven from the face of Norrath as well.
  • The long-requested global chat channels are well on their way. We'll be supporting player-created chat channels for raids, for friends, for total strangers - Anything you'd like to use them for. Expect a documentation update (eqmanual_supplement.doc in your EverQuest directory) explaining how to use these soon.
  • There's definately gonna be alot to smile about (I'm absolutely jones'd about the final introduction of private chat channels), but at the same time, it'll only help to increase the amount of level 50+ characters that still play like level 1 n00bs!

Jedi Outcast Interview with Kenn Hoekstra

More stuff on the soon to be here, much anticipated Jedi Knight 2. Here's a little preview.
Judging by the intense and impressive released screens of various lightsaber battles, it looks like players will have a very large degree of control over both Kyle Katarn’s physical movement, as well as control over his lightsaber - are we correct to assume this? And can you explain a little about the mechanics of both, in taking part in lightsaber battles?

"Kyle’s lightsaber movements are directly tied to his physical movements themselves. From the most basic standpoint, the lightsaber has a primary swing attack and the alternate saber attack is the saber throw. From there, you factor in Kyle’s directional movement (front/back/left/right) as well as whether or not Kyle is crouching, jumping, walking, running or standing still. You also need to factor in other special movements (like flips and wall walking), combinations and which of the three saber fighting styles he’s using at the time. In addition to the physical, primary attacks, the saber has three levels of saber throw and three levels of defense for blocking shots/parrying saber attacks. Put it all together and you’ve got a massive number of lightsaber moves Kyle can perform. To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about, Kyle has about 500 animations for the lightsaber movements and attacks if you include all of the transition moves from one attack animation to another."
Have a look-see at the entire interview.

There's claims that 9.1 will offer a number of new enhancements, such as bringing the pixel and vertex shader to version 2. No news on an expected release date, but being that Microsoft already offered Beta Signups for the next release, we can hope for sometime in the near future.

For those of you who didn't stop playing Stormfron Studios' Pools of Radiance within the first week of it's relesae like me (too many bugs for my taste), then you'll be happy to know that
they have release a new patch (ver 1.4, weighing in at 6.4MB for the English release). Updates and fixes to the new release include:
  • Beriand failing to heal parties after returning his staff.
  • A crash at the Trapfall area of the Glin Gardens.
  • Chests in Dwarven Dungeons opening and missing items.
  • Ancient Iron Key missing.
  • A few crashes in the Elven Catacombs.
  • May be worth a try now that the game is actually fairly stable. Worse case, if you loose your characters to yet another bug, there's plenty of "cheats" out there to get your characters back to where the once were.

EverQuest fans alike have heard the rumors of the possible forthcoming expansion, The Planes of Power. The guys over at GameSpy have poosted an interview with SoE's Rod Humble which helps give players a bit of reassurance that the expansion is indead real. Though a lot of the details won't surface until next week when they are supposed to officially announce it, there's enough information to keep people talking until then. Snip
GameSpy: Regular players know that Planar zones are geared for the high-level players and guilds. What will The Planes of Power offer to the lower level players?

Rod Humble: The Planes of Power will have many upgrades for characters of all levels. For example, we will be announcing extra planar trade skills and many more features once we get a bit closer to launch.
Included in the interview are a few screenshots from some of the new creatures in the game.

More MMORPG news, this time it comes from Mythic producer Matt Firor, who has posted another of his Dark Age of Camelot producer notes. Included in this latest update are screen shots showing off the new player housing, some of the new Albs armor types, and the new epic dungeons which will appear on the test servers sometime before next week. Here's a snip:
A huge new mid-to-high level dungeon will debut on Pendragon over the next week or so. This dungeon lets players explore the underworld - under all three Realms - that is populated by the dead souls of Hibernians, Britons, and Norse. It is overseen by many demons, evil imps, and many other hellish creatures. Entrance to this new dungeon - called Darkness Falls - will be restricted to one Realm at a time. We'll announce how access is controlled next week, but it will be based on RvR elements. Darkness Falls will have many new monster models, skins, and monster sounds, and it is huge.
If there's one thing DAoC has over Everquest, it's definately the graphics engine *drool*.

Do you remember the 1982 sci-fi thriller "John Carpenter's The Thing"? Where the aliens that were frozen under the Antartic cap are brought back to life by an unsuspecting team of scientist. The aliens unknowingly take over the living bodies of anything living and reak havoc among the camp.

Well now, in the upcoming game release, "The Thing", you are ported as part of the military rescue team that is sent to investigate the disappearance of the scientists. The game features:

  • Taking place shortly after the events seen in the 1982 film - The Thing takes us back to the Antarctic base and familiar locals from the film for a terrifying, new chapter of isolation and paranoia.
  • Advanced trust/fear interface adds a new dimension to the genre - How you influence non-player characters (NPCs) psychological state determines whether or not these characters will cooperate with you. · Amazing lighting, weather and particle effects complemented by subtle sound cues and scripted events create a new level of suspense and terror.
  • Unique combat system that allows weapons to be customized and scratch built in many cases.
  • Puzzle Solving can be accomplished by a multitude of scenarios - there is never just one way to accomplish an objective.
  • Varied pace of gameplay throughout the game, blending action, puzzles, horror and human interaction.

According to this post over at Gamespot, the folks behind EVE-Online have signed a deal with CCP to publish their upcoming MMO space game. Here's a snip on the game itself:
EVE: The Second Genesis, is a massively multiplayer, online, persistent world game. perhaps even too real to be called a game, but definitely more fun than reality. Played on the Net, it takes place in a world that is alive and kicking every day, every hour. Players are spaceship captains cruising around the universe, trading, fighting and communicating with other players. EVE is scheduled for a 2002 release.

    DoD Interview

The Half-Life Mod scene continues to strive, especially the ever-popular Day of Defeat. The folks over atRedphive have posted an interview with Matt "Mugsy" Boone, explaining some of the changes and enhancements to the upcoming v2.1 release. Snip snip:
There have been some significant changes made to some of the more popular maps in DoD 2.1, can you give us an idea as to what they are?

MB: While most of the changes are optimizations of textures and memory usages, there are some gameplay changes too.. Anzio is a big one, the town square flag and the bridge flag now require 2 people to capture them. Heutau was also a big fan request - now the spawn points move forward depending on who owns the central flag. There is a lot more action on this map now, and we've had some great matches. What else.. well there are a lot of little changes. But the big news is that the memory usage is lowered, so people don't get the slowdowns in certain areas that we were seeing before, and older machines can run the game properly.
It's amazing to see continued support for such an aging graphics engine, especially when compared to the Quake III, Unreal or LithTech engine.
